XZ. Description o f Apparatus
1* Con^ressor.
The a ir con^pressor under consideration was b u ilt by the
In gersoll Sargeant D r ill Co. New fork, and was in sta lle d by them in
the Mechanical Engineering Laboratory at the University of I l l i n o i s
in 1905. The machine is known as a cross confound two-stage a ir com
pressor £uid has the follow ing dimensions : 13” z 13” high pressure
steamj and 13i-” z 13” high pressure a ir ; 33” z 13” low pressure steam
IS^-” z 13” low pressure a ir . A ll piston rods are 3” in diameter ez-
cept that o f the low pressure a ir head end which i s 4.375” in diam
eter and o f the high pressure a ir head end which i s 3.75” in diameter.
The cylinder clearance volumes were very ca refu lly deter
mined previously and were found to be fo r the high pressure steam
cylin der 5.8^ fo r head end and fo r cramk end 7.3^; fo r the low pres
sure steam cylinder 4.8^ fo r head end and fo r crank end 4,4^. For the
a ir cylinders the clearaince volumes arej fo r the high pressure, head
end 3.0^ and fo r the crank end 3.0^ ; fo r the low pressure cylinder
3.3^ fo r head end and 3.35& fo r the crank end.
The capacity o f the compressor is rated at 473 cubic fe e t
of free a ir p e r minute at 150 revolutions per minute and against a
pressure of 90 pounds per square inch.
The term cross compo\ind as mentioned above in ^ lie s that
the high pressure steam and the high pressure a ir cylinders are both
on the same side o f the in te rco o le r working in tandem, while on the
other side the low pressure a ir and steam cylinders work in tandem.
It follow s that the steam must enter the high pressure steam cylinder
f i r s t and a fter p a rtia l expansion cross to the low pressure steam
cylinder and a fte r th is second expansion the steam i s ezhausted in to
the condenser. The a ir enters the low pressure cylin der on the oppo-

s ite side from tHe steam and is p a r tia lly compressed in the low pres
sure a ir cylinder and then passes into the in te rco o le r , which as has
been mentioned before i s in the base o f the machine, from the in te r
c o o le r the a ir passes through the high pressure a ir cylinder where
the compression i s completed* The cooling systems are independent o f
each other, that i s the jacket water flows through the high pressure
a ir cylinder jacket f i r s t , then through the low pressure a ir cylin der
ja ck et, thus completing the cooling cy cle o f the a ir cylin ders, while
the water fo r the in te rco o le r passes in on one side o f the in te rco o l
er and out on the other, thus completing the second cooling system

V. Oonolusions:-
The compressor is o f large enough capacity to warrant the
resu lts obtained in these te sts being considered as approximately
what would be expected from tests o f machines o f lik e capacity in
actual commercial use.
The most economical speed fo r the compressor is at a point
where tlie ra tio of the th e o re tica l horse power required fo r isotherm
a l compression to the actual horse power required is a maximum, since
the energy expended in isothermal conqpression o f the a ir is a l l
available in the a ir fo r use in a ir engines etc. Hence the speed at
which the most energy is rendered available fo r the least power u t i l
ized in storing i t up is the desirable speed fo r maximum economy.
Under the conditions o f these tests the speed fo r TnaTiiTmiw economy is
about 80 or 90 revolutions per minute as shown by curve on page .
To obtain the greates economy in the use o f steam the
th ro ttle should be wide open and the speed regulated by varying the
c u t -o ff, that is always have the c u t -o ff as short as p ossib le. A gov»
em or operated by the pressure of the a ir in the receiver and so de
vised that i t would vary the c u t -o ff instead o f con trollin g the speed
by the wasteful th rottlin g process would lead to more e ffic ie n t com
pressor operation.
An e ffic ie n t cooling system is inportant and should be
given careful attention to see that i t s e ffic ie n c y i s not inpaired by
scalin g or f i l l i n g with sediment. In th is p a rticu la r machine an in
te rco o le r o f large capacity would decrease the work o f conpression by
eq\ializing the temperatures of the a ir leaving the high and the low
pressure cylin ders, and thus aid the e ffic ie n c y o f the machine as re-
fered to previously.
