1. INTRODUCTION

This report presents the structural design of Connections for Steel (Bay) Assembly Workshop, Area-2. This report
gives the detailed design methodology of the for connections of members which will be compatible with the
structural design, satisfy the functional needs, adhering to the building norms and Indian Standards provisions.
The connections are grouped based on forces, section capacities and representative calculatio ns are included in
this report.

2. SCOPE OF WORK

Based on final design drawings issued by consultant, detailed design of connections for all primary and secondary
built up; hot rolled members and cold formed members is performed along with detailed drawings for fabrication
and erection. Fabrication and erection drawings prepared based on design drawings will be used for fabrication and
erection.

3. REFERENCE DOCUMENTS & DRAWINGS

Design drawings for Steel (Bay) Assembly Workshop, Area-2 issued by consultant as mentioned below will be used
for connections design and generation of fabrication and erection drawings.

5. CONNECTIONS DESIGN METHODOLOGY

All connections will be checked for Plate bending, plate shear, block shear, plate bearing stresses, bolt tension, bolt
shear and bolt bearing strengths. Anchor bolts will be checked for bolt tension, bolt shear along with embedment
length check. Apart from these checks, all connections are designed for lesser of force calcula ted as per below two
conditions-
1) Force calculated based on full elastic tension capacity of the member considering reduction in strength due
to non-connected flanges and bolt holes.
2) Two times the actual envelope of factored forces and moments

Structural member connections that resist lateral loads as mentioned below will be checked for provisions of this
section.
1) Main frame connections.
2) All Pinned base connections.
3) All fix base connections.
4) Connections for Structural Bracing System.
5) All lacing member connections for columns.
All connection bolts shall be Turned & Fitted Bolts of minimum grade 8.8.
Structural strength evaluation shall be based on effective sectional properties.
Welded splices for built up members shall be of full penetration butt welds. Splices for standard sections shall be
checked for maximum of tension due to bending capacity and axial tension capacity of the member.
All secondary members which are not part of lateral resisting system will be checked for actual forces only. These
include purlins, girts, mezzanine joists, flange braces, sag rods, crane beams , surge beams, etc.
Site / field welding will be avoided. If unavoidable, all site welds will be checked for force conditions mentioned
above in this section. The same will be checked and certified using standard test methods.
All welded connections shall be done in plant. All site splice connections shall be bolted. Welded splice connection
on site shall not be undertaken.
Thickening of connections / plates at Nodes / splicing shall be designed such that services are not hampered and
functional requirement are satisfied.
All Nodes must be fully restrained / supported against any possible movements, warping due to welding work, until
complete stability is achieved from other secondary frame / members.
