Summary
Road traffic injuries are a major but neglected public health challenge that requires
concerted efforts for effective and sustainable prevention. Worldwide, an estimated 1.2
million people are killed in road crashes each year and as many as 50 million are injured.
Projections indicate that these figures will increase by about 65% over the next 20 years
unless there is new commitment to prevention. Nepal’s fatality rate in fiscal year
2009/10 was 17 per 10,000 registered vehicles, which is one of the highest rates in both
Asia and the world.
Of all victims who are killed, 57 per cent die in the first minutes after the crash, before
the arrival of the emergency services. First aid provided in these vital first minutes can
save lives and help both victims and bystanders cope psychologically. So, acquiring first
aid skills could be a valuable asset of preparedness for such happenings, because first
aid is a lifesaving skill. It is the first intervention after road accident and the only way for
saving victim/s life or limbs and stabilizes the health condition of injured by road traffic
crash until advance medical treatment is available.
For the effective response of road crash,
Integrated community Development
Movement Nepal (ICODEMON)) is
contemplating an innovative program
named as “First Aid intervention on the
highway (first aid and road safety-pre-
hospital treatment)”. Under this
program, Road safety and Emergency
First Aid Training in Kathmandu
First Aid training is provided to security
personal, owner, driver and staff of public transport, representatives of local club,
community leaders, staffs of government, teacher, student and mother group etc.
The main goal of this training was to create trained first aid service providers to provide
first aid and road safety-pre-hospital treatment until advance medical treatment is
available. Different methods/approaches like Discussion, Question/answer,
Demonstration, Brain storming, Game & Simulation exercise along with interactive
lecturing were used to make the training process effective. The training was conducted
for a period of three days.
