Dear Students of mine...
Here is a secret...I always hated percents. (Just like many of you said)

But once I understood WHAT they actually meant, suddenly life was much easier.
Secret number two: I didn’t understand what they meant until I started teaching
them.

As a student I just memorized how to turn them to a decimal and multiply.

(Which of course will always work) but I wish I had taken the time to understand
what I was doing and why...because now they are so much easier
- and actually useful in real life.

Before we get to the fun stuff, we must go over the basics. So please take notes on
the following slides so that we can move on to the fun stuff.

A Video Review: Watch now if you have
headphones...otherwise come back to it later :)
Percents are just fancy ratios.
so basically you can
already do anything with
them...just think of 23% as
another way of saying “a
ratio of 23 to 100”

Percents can be rewritten as fractions and decimals

.
Decimals to Percents
Decimal Percentage
To change a decimal into a

change this into a decimal, you divide 35 by 100

35% ÷ 100 0.35

Move decimal point 2 places to the
LEFT and remove the % sign.

Fractions to Percents
1) Try to change the fraction to a
denominator of 100 (Because
that’s automatically a percent)
Or…
2) Change the fraction to a decimal,
then move the decimal point 2 spots
to the right.
Express as a percent.
Set up an “ out of 100 ” proportion
Convert numerator
x 25

x 25

Check to see how you would convert the first

denominator to 100.
Express as a percent.

Or you can express fractions
as percents by long division

Convert decimal to percent by moving 2

decimal places to the right and adding % sign
Express fractions as percents by long division
Percents to Fractions
Just make the percent a fraction with
a denominator of 100...
then REDUCE if possible :)

24% = 24/100 12/50 6/25
