Scale Factor COPY
● A scale drawing has the same shape, but is not the same
size, as the object it represents.
● The scale factor is the number you multiply every
dimension by to either increase or decrease the size.
○ If the scale factor is less than one (A FRACTION!), the
size of an object or a number is being decreased.
○ If the scale factor is greater than one, the size of an
object or a number is being increased.
● Always scale all of the sides of a figure before finding the
area of the figure.
● To find a scale that was used, always do “new”/”original”
○ Similar to y/x….the y value (output) is the new size, the x

3. What was the scale factor used?
3 Answer:What was the scale factor used?
W K U W K U Actual Area:
drawing 2in = 12in drawing 2in = 6in
actual 4ft x actual 4ft x L x W
24in x 12in
2x = 48 24 = 2x
x = 24 12 = x
= 288 ft2

D. 70 Correct Answer
Why??
This reduction is similar to a picture that
Katie painted. The height of the actual
painting is 54 centimeters.
What is the width of the actual painting?
2 cm = 3 cm
____
54cm w cm Write a proportion.
54 • 3 = 2 • w The cross products are equal.
162 = 2w w is multiplied by 2.
162 = ___
____ 2w Divide both sides by 2 to
2 2 undo the multiplication.
81 = w
The width of the actual painting is 81 cm.
