I. Introduction or Background of the Entrepreneurial Idea

According to Moore, “plastics were found to be tenacious polluters of many

environmental niches. Whether being mistaken for food by animals, flood low-lying areas by

clogging drainage systems, or simply causing significant aesthetic blight, plastics have

attracted people’s attention as a large-scale pollutant.” It is known that one of the biggest

problems that the Earth is facing right now is the pollution and we can’t deny the fact that

plastic is the largest pollutant. To start generating such necessary ideas, the proponents did

a focus group discussion in order for them to share their ideas with one another. Each of them

gave their own insights and suggestions about what might possible innovative product can

they offer. During the discussion of the proponents, they let themselves analyze their

surroundings. The proponents have thought of different environment-related problems that

the country is facing nowadays. This certain topic led the proponents to the decision of

creating a product which can lessen the rate of pollution caused by the plastic cutlery.

According to the 2018 WWF report, “marine litter is a growing global problem. We have

all heard the warning by the world economic forum and others that, measured by weight, there

will be more plastic than fish in the world’s oceans by 2050 if we continue dumping plastics in

the sea at the present rate.” Meaning, most of the plastic pollutants are the plastic cutlery

used by humans. These are the utensils such as spoons, forks, plastic knives, and other tools

use for serving and eating food. With that being said, the proponents decided to think of a

product which can be an alternative for the usual plastic cutlery, and they came up with the

idea of creating and selling bamboo cutlery. It is now the time that people should avoid

purchasing single-use cutleries. After using several plastic spoon and fork, people tend to just

throw them anywhere and mostly to the streams and rivers which are connected to the

oceans. That is why at the end of the day, all of the plastics residues and trashes goes and

stays in the oceans. If all of the people will use wooden cutleries, the production of plastic will

be lessen and people will now then be able to help the mother nature to go back to its natural

beauty and to preserve its resources that humans need to sustain their lives.

According to the Bamboo Village (2019), "Bamboo is one of the fastest

growing plants in the world. Once harvested, bamboo can replenish itself within a year and

some species grow a whopping 120cm per day! It is a naturally productive and resilient plant,

which does not need fertilizers to boost its growth, or pesticides since bamboo is naturally

pest-resistant." The proponents chose to use bamboo in creating an innovative product since

bamboo is a chemical-free organism, it is really safe to use for making utensils and cutleries

because it is not producing any harmful substances that might possibly bring diseases to

those people who will use it. Also, once you harvested a bamboo, it can reproduce by its own

so quickly. According to Department of Science and Technology (2011), each year bamboo

should put on new leaves, and normally a cane has been living for 10 years. A bamboo cane

never grows again in height or diameter after the 60-day growth period. Bamboo has no

secondary growth like trees or the rest of flora.

According to Virtucio et al (1983), "the projected potentially available culm or poles

ranges from 39.2 million to 52.7 million culm or poles harvested every year." The proponents

also comes up to the idea of using Bamboo as a primary resources because Philippines has

a high rate of bamboo plants since it can grow anywhere. If ever this plan will pursue by the

proponents, they will not have a hard time on finding resources for their product.

The proponents have noticed that today, although there are some businesses or

entrepreneurs selling environmental- friendly stuffs, there are still a large percentage of

businesses which constantly manufacturing and producing plastic tools. In-lined with this

thing, the proponents want to start a business which will not only produce eco-friendly stuffs,

but also a business which can definitely be an eye opener for the people. Since companies

are still into plastic components for their products, the proponents want to take advantage to

that existing condition so that people will see something new.

People are not aware that some of the things that they use are not good for the

environment. Most of the people are not knowledgeable enough on how to properly dispose

a product. And the problem is that, if people are using a single-use product, they will just

dispose these products immediately without thinking of where will they dispose it. And that’s

the need that the proponents saw, people should use re-usable cutleries. People should

purchase something that they can use for a long period of time. The proponents wants to

solve the need of preventing environmental problems caused by the humans and stopping

the pollution fostered by plastic products. The proponents came up to this idea and product

to help people to live sustainably and to encourage them to care, preserve and enhance the

environment since people are dependent on this in terms of their needs on their everyday

lives.

According to Mabaquiao (2018), the Department of Trade and Industry (DTI) is

optimistic that the bamboo industry in the province could generate more jobs and income for

the bamboo-growing communities. Engr. Arlene Galopo, DTI- Antique Senior Trade and

Industry Development Specialist, cited opportunities for farmers, businesses and Antiquenos

in general when the bamboo industry goes full swing. “Bamboo poles and furniture are among

the products sold in the local market, however, there are demands for engineered bamboo

and other products needed for construction, restaurants and other businesses,” she said.

DTI assured the farmers that there will be Shared Service Facilities (SSF) for bamboo

products that will help them improved their quality. On the pipeline is the SSF for bamboo in

Sibalom with the municipal government taking the lead for the Sibalom Bamboo Crafters

Association and another SSF is coming for the town of Tobias Fornier.

Architect Joy Martinez-Onozawa, resource speaker during the bamboo investment

forum here encouraged farmers to engage in the chain of the bamboo industry as it offers a

lot of opportunities from planting to processing and production of various materials and goods.

Onozawa assured that marketing of bamboo products will not be a problem. A number of

companies are looking for quality materials for construction, furniture, restaurants, and

agricultural implements, among other uses of bamboo. “As long as the bamboos are treated

properly and passed the quality standards, there will be huge market,” she said. However,

she emphasized that it takes commitment, dedication and community participation to make

the industry grow. She encouraged the farmers to plant more bamboos for export noting that

the Philippines is lagging behind other countries in terms of supply brought to the world

market. She noted that 1,000- 2,000 poles per month will be a good start.

During the forum she provided an orientation to the farmers on how to grow, harvest

and treat bamboo making it quality material for many uses. Mary Angeline Cortes of the

European Chamber of Commerce of the Philippines (ECCP) also expressed support to the

bamboo farmers stating that ECCP has market linkages for their products. These proves that

bamboo utensils or some products can give a greater opportunity not only for the business

but also for the economy and agriculture of the Philippines. Also, it can support and promote

our local farmers and give them more income than they were earning before. For the business,

opportunities are everywhere whether it is from the resources or to the market. From

resources, bamboos are cheap and easy to produce, for the market, it can be distributed in

any enterprise that attains a sustainable business operation.

II. Business Idea Overview

A. Initial Concept of the Entrepreneurial Idea

Camp Kawayan aims to produce cutlery that are good quality, durable, affordable and

helpful to our environment by reducing plastic usage and promote planting trees and plants.

It is both marketable since it is unique, new, catchy and profitable since the proponents will

be needing less resources and will only use bamboo as the main component. To make it

unique, the utensils has a plant seed at the end of the handle that will grow once it is planted.

The proponents came up to emerge when they observed that there are still lot of people who

use plastic utensils and we all know that plastics are one of the contributory factors of

pollution. The entrepreneurs came up to a product that can help our environment in a small

way. In addition, trees and plants are important for our environment since green is clean and

plants produces oxygen that we breathe so it is both beneficial to the environment and

humans.

The product is also new and fresh that is why the entrepreneur will be having less

competitors and it is an advantage for the success of the product. The customer will

experience satisfaction since they are using recyclable utensils and they are helping also the

environment by increasing the number of trees in our country. The entrepreneur will be using

good quality bamboos and will make it is handy so consumers can bring it anywhere.

B. Brand Name and Logo

Figure 1: Brand Name and Logo

Figure 1 presents the brand name and logo which consists of texts with a Sawali

(wooden split bamboo mats) background, a bamboo frame since it is the structural material

needed for the production of product. The proponents used “camp” to present a group of

people supporting the resurgence of the environment and the word “kawayan” to depict the

main material of the product. The leaves in the logo represent the possible growth of plants

by the use of product. With this visual, the potential buyers will be attracted especially for

those eco-conscious individuals. The logo may be simple but the visibility of color green,

regardless of the shades, depicts love for nature, meaning of growth is also associated with

it nonetheless.

D. Proposed location/Distribution Method

The location for a business is always important to consider because it will be the key

to the success of your product. We are planning to locate our business in a place that are

both beneficial to us and to our consumers, where we can sell our product easily and where

we will have a large range of consumers. We considered a place that is accessible and near

to us.

The proposed location for our product is at Mercatto, Bonifacio Global City since there

are a lot of food parks in that place. The location will need a booth type space and it will

include our storage and counter/ service area.

The store will be located on food parks in order to catch more customers. This will be

an excellent location since there are a lot of people going there every day, it would be an

advantage for us to promote and sell our product faster since most of the food establishments

there uses plastic utensils. Our product has serious growth potential for a reason that people

always need to use utensils there. We are also planning of creating our own social media

pages for a much wider market. We will be having online transactions and we will be delivering

our products across the country.

III. Market Analysis

A. Target Market

Camp Kawayan aims to captivate people who loves to eat and people who has an eco-

lifestyle and supports the recovery of the forests. The entrepreneurs want to introduce

their business to everyone who cares about the longevity of the Earth’s life. Basically,

Camp Kawayan is for everyone. Regardless of age or gender, it is the goal of the product

that will describe the potential buyers.

This product also targets people who are hygienic or concerned with their personal

utensils/tools. Mainly, travelers that require lightweight cutleries that are easy to go with.

This product is also applicable for students and employees who bring lunch to their

workplace/school.

B. SWOT Analysis

SWOT Analysis will help to identify Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and

Threats related to business competition and business planning for bamboo utensils.

Strength is a resource or capacity the organization can use effectively to achieve its

objectives. The business will identify the strengths provided by the bamboo utensils

implanted with a plant seed. The strengths of bamboo utensils implanted with a plant seed

are: eco-friendly, resources are renewable, cheap, and it can encourage people to plant.

Bamboos are easy to produce and does not need huge amount of money to produce. It is

also durable and biodegradable. Bamboo is one of the fast growing grass in the earth

that's why it is an advantage and a strength for the business. While plant seeds are pretty

cheap too, it's a perfect-combination example of an eco-friendly product.

Weakness is a limitation, fault, or defect in the organization that will keep it from

achieving its objectives. The analysis will identify the weaknesses of the bamboo utensils

implanted with a plant seed. Its weaknesses are its short life-span. It has a short life span

because it will develop harmful bacteria when not disposed in a certain short period of

time. Poor resistance to fungi and bacteria, although it is bamboo, it is already a dead stalk

of bamboo which means that its anti-bacterial agents are already absent in the bamboo
Republic of the Philippines

INSTITUTE OF LIBERAL ARTS AND SCIENCES

that could lead to poor bacterial and fungal resistant. Damage or splinters caused by water

and several uses. Using it for 20-30 times will lead to the damaging of the utensil. As for

the plant seed, it will decompose when the bamboo utensil have bacteria and fungi

especially near to the seed.

Opportunity is any favourable situation in the organization's environment. It is usually

a trend or change of some kind or an overlooked need that increases demand for a product

or service and permits the firm to enhance its position by supplying it. The analysis will

help identify the opportunities that bamboo utensils implanted with a plant seed can give.

These potential opportunities that bamboo utensils with plant seeds could give are the

following: it can be a soil fertilizer when disposed, could supply the needs of SMEs for eco-

friendly utensils, can dominate the fast food industry and it could provide work for local

agricultural workers/farmers, can make different kind of plants from the seeds, and it can

enlighten the people that planting seeds is important.

Threat is any unfavourable situation in the organization’s environment that is potentially

damaging to its strategy. The threat may be a barrier, a constraint, or anything external

that might cause problems, damage or injury. While its threats are it is imitable. Although

it is a unique concept, imitating the product is easy because bamboos can be planted or

found easily. Also, the designs of the products are not complicated. One threat also is the

existing high competition in the market. This could be the most major threat that the

business could encounter. Rising above other competitors will be a tough job to do.

C. PESTEL Analysis

PESTEL Analysis is used to identify the impacts or factors that affect the product in

terms of political, economic, social, technological, environmental, and legal factors.

Politically, this product can be affiliated with Department of Environment and Natural

Resources (DENR) since they are governing the conservation and utilization of the

environment.

Economically, Camp Kawayan can inspire other industries that produce plastics or

unsustainable materials for their production and distribution that can result to much less

plastic packaging. With that, production and consumption of plastic might decline in the

near future. It can also affect other business, especially in food industry, due to the purpose

of the product that is complimentary for their product/offering. Camp Kawayan can also

generate profit for the bamboo planters in the Philippines. Along with that, this can also

provide jobs for the people. However, since inflation came along, the rate of labor is getting

higher in which it can affect the production depending on the proponent’s hired labor.

Socially, this product affects the society to be conscious on plastic consumption and

living sustainably. As regard to introducing this to the market, it will help the people to

accept reusable materials/tools that can ease the waste management. This product is also

beneficial to people who prefer lightweight cutlery to bring wherever they want to eat,

mainly travelers and students. Nowadays, people strive to be environmentally friendly. It

is now a trend and it is beneficial for the product that everyone is concerned with the

environment. By this, it gives the consumer the responsibility and an opportunity to plant

for the environment.

Republic of the Philippines

INSTITUTE OF LIBERAL ARTS AND SCIENCES
Piccio Garden, Villamor, Pasay City

Technologically, Camp Kawayan is a reusable cutlery that has a moisture content

because of the material used. With that, the product is biodegradable. With this invented

utensil, it is better than a plastic disposable cutlery that does not decay. Unlike metal

spoons, Camp Kawayan won’t scratch any cookware or containers that will affect its

condition. The presence of online marketing in social media can also affect the product. It

will be easily promoted and can spread easily by the use of social media and other

advertisements.

Environmentally, Camp Kawayan can lessen the disposable waste since it is the

purpose of the product. In addition to that, the proponents aim to increase the number of

trees with the use of simple utensils.

With the legal factors affecting the business, with this type of product that call for

contact with mouth, it should be Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved that will

ensure the safety and health of the buyers.
