GO GREEN INITIATIVE

5
CHAPTER 1
INTRODUCTION

GO GREEN INITIATIVE:

Go green is the way to live life without affecting the nature. We had a very good
nature to us. We have to keep it safe and should maintain it’s original and have
to give to our next generation. Nature is very beautiful and wonderful. But we are
spoiling our nature by using plastic and other kinds of plastic items. So please
avoid using the plastic.
After considering environmental and health issues related to mounting plastic
waste, the government of Kerala decided to ban single-use-plastic products in the
state from January 1, 2020.

Plastic carry bags, plastic sheets, cooling films, plastic plates, cups, thermocol
and Styrofoam-based fancy items and other plastic products have been banned.

As per the decision, plastic manufacturers, wholesalers and small sellers who
violate the law can be fined Rs 10,000 for the first time and Rs 25,000 for
violating the law again.

Being socially responsible citizens its our duty to save the nature. So as part of
our project we have decided to clean up one of the beauty spot of Kerala- VELI
TOURIST VILLAGE and to make people aware about the bad effects of using
one time use plastics.

6
VELI TOURIST VILLAGE:

As the name suggests, Veli is a tourist village that is popular as a picnic

destination in Thiruvananthapuram district. The place features a large garden on
the southern banks of Veli Lagoon; a floating bridge that connects this garden to
the Veli Beach. It is an ideal destination for a family picnic as there are wide
range of attractions such as play areas for children, boat rides in Veli Lake, horse
riding option, and a floating restaurant can be found here. Apart from these, there
is a a long walkway connecting Aakulam Lake that catches one’s attention, there
are also some stone and grass sculptures by Kanayi Kunhiraman which add to the
landscape of the garden; a collection of birds such as pigeons and swans, and few
small ponds with fish and tortoises in them.

GETTING THERE:
Veli Tourist Village is located about 10 kms from Thiruvananthapuram city. One
can take a bus, auto or a taxi to reach Veli.

THINGS TO DO & SEE IN AND AROUND:

It is an ideal family picnic destination where one can enjoy boating, horse riding,
different games in the garden area, birdwatching and spotting fish and tortoises.

BEST TIME TO VISIT:

The winter months between November and February are ideal to visit this place
as one can comfortable head out in the sun without feeling any humidity and
sweltering heat.

Even though being one of the attractive tourist spot of Kerala the dispersal of
plastic seems to kill the beauty of VELI.

CHAPTER 5
CONCLUSION

The very first week we went, there was a lot of garbage. We found many cans,
wrappers, straws, etc. After our programme there was barely anything to clean
up. There were people ready to help us in cleaning campaign, those active minds
helped us a lot and they exhibited their concern for nature. After the campaign
we realise that this was one of the efforts which we could have done before. These
garbage’s definitely would damage the ecosystem and could hurt turtles, different
kinds of fish etc. Therefore, we did make a difference by cleaning VELI
TOURIST VILLAGE.
