Graphics is an inseparable part of the design process: an important tool which provides
the designer with the means not only of presenting a design proposal but also of
communicating with him/herself and others in the design studio and in the building
industry.
The basis for most architectural drawing and graphic communication is the line, and the
essence of a line is its continuity.
Line Types
The information conveyed through line drawing depends primarily on the visual weight
of the line types used and their discernible differences. Line types can be thin/thick,
straight/wavy zigzag continuous/ segmented (dash), grid or crossing lines.
Lines can be placed next to and over other lines to form patterns.
Image
Architects and artists use lines to communicate or document forms, imagined or real
through two and three-dimensional illustration.
In architecture, communication is vital among all the parties in the design and

construction process: design consultants, contractors, suppliers, financiers and clients.
The architect endeavors to communicate what he/she can visualize in his/her mind
through drawings, in order that the vision may be realized in physical terms.
Objectives
The objectives of the following exercises in line drawing and composition are to acquaint
you with the basic tool in graphic communication, to develop your skills in free hand
drawing and enhance your appreciation of line drawing and line quality.
Exercise 1
On a A3 paper in landscape format. Define six frames of 120mm x 120mm and draw the
following compositions using 2H/HB/4B leads on separate papers.
(a) Horizontal straight lines at increasing intervals from 2mm-7mm draw four lines
per each interval and repeat the pattern to occupy the defined frame.
(b) As in (a) above but vertical straight lines
(c) Vertical and horizontal crossing lines using (a) and (b) above
(d) Crossing diagonal lines as in (c) above.
Exercise 2
An organization has requested you to give them at least 6 alternative designs for a floor
pattern they wish to use in remodeling their reception space in an office which is square
in shape.
Present your design proposals on the same format of 120mm frame.
Exercise 3
a) All the pictures, painting, murals, mirrors, door and window openings in a
building project will be framed using timber on which the designers wish to etch
or cut out a pattern. This assignment has been given to you and you have been
asked to prepare four alternative proposals on an A4 paper,. The size of the frame
should be represented by 45mm border on all sides.
