2. Description of the activity

Type of the activity: Individual ☒ Collaborative ☐ Weeks 2

Moment of evaluation: Initial ☒ Unit, Intermediate: ☐ Final ☐
Delivery Environment of the activity:
Evaluative score of the activity: 25
Monitoring and evaluation environment
Starting date of the activity: Deadline of the activity:
February 01, 2020 February 14, 2020
Competence to develop:
The student remembers the concepts of wave physics and electromagnetism, to determine
parameters and general characteristics of electromagnetic waves, using concepts and
mathematical methods for the solution of application exercises.
Topics to develop:
- Electromagnetic waves.
- Parameters of electromagnetic waves.
- Electrical permittivity and magnetic permeability.
Steps, phases of the learning strategy to develop
Dear student, this activity called Pre task is individual, for your development you must
follow the 5 steps:
Step 1: Explore the academic resource "Electromagnetic waves in free space"
described at the beginning of the next section of this document "Activities to develop".
Step 2: Download the “Annex 1 - Delivery format - Step 1” found in the collaborative
learning environment in the "Activities guide and evaluation rubric – Pre task -
Introduction" folder.
Step 3: Answer the 4 introductory questions proposed in the next section of this
document "Activities to develop".
Step 4: Each student must complete the task in their individual "Delivery format",
verifying the requirements of the evaluation rubric. You can share your progress and
questions in the "Pre task" forum.
Step 5: Submit the requested work in the Monitoring and Evaluation Environment.
Activities to develop
Explore within the Knowledge Environment, in Unit 1, the bibliographical references of
Quesada, M., & Maroto, J. (2014), pages 49-60 and the video of Gutiérrez, W. (2017), and
solve the following questions:

1. What is an electromagnetic wave?

2. What is electrical permittivity 𝜺 and magnetic permeability 𝝁 of a medium?
3. In a vacuum, what is the value of the electric permittivity 𝜺𝒐 and the magnetic
permeability 𝝁𝒐 ?
4. From the following wave equation:
𝟐𝝅
𝑬𝒚 (𝒙, 𝒕) = 𝑨 𝒔𝒆𝒏(𝒘𝒕 − 𝒌𝒙) = 𝑨 𝒔𝒆𝒏 (𝟐𝝅𝒇𝒕 − 𝒙) = 𝑪𝟏 𝒔𝒆𝒏(𝑪𝟐 𝒙𝟏𝟎𝟑 𝒕 − 𝑪𝟑 𝒙)
𝝀
where 𝑪𝟏 , 𝑪𝟐 and 𝑪𝟑 correspond to the last 3 digits of your identification, calculate:
a. Amplitude 𝑨.
b. Frequency 𝒇.
c. Wavelength 𝝀.
d. Propagation speed 𝑽𝒑 = 𝒇 𝝀.
e. Wave number 𝒌.
f. Angular frequency 𝒘.
g. Direction of travel.
h. Polarization direction.

The APA standards are the style of organization and presentation of

information most used in the area of social sciences. These are published
under a manual that allows you to have access to the ways in which a
Use of scientific article should be presented. Here you can find the most relevant
references aspects of the sixth edition of the APA Standards Manual, such as
references, citations, preparation and presentation of tables and figures,
headings and seriation, among others. You can check how to implement
them by going to http://normasapa.com/
In the agreement 029 of December 13, 2013, article 99, the mistakes that
infringe upon the academic order, among others, are the following:
paragraph e) “To plagiarize is to present as your own work the whole or
part of a writing, report, task or document of invention performed by
another person. It also implies the use of cites or lack of references, or
includes cites where there is no coincidence between them and the
Plagiarism reference” and paragraph f)”To reproduce, or copy for profit, educational
policy resources or results of research products, which have intellectual rights
reserved for the University”.
The academic punishments that the student will face are:
a) In case of academic fraud proved in the academic work or evaluation,
the score achieved will be zero (0.0) without leading to disciplinary
measures.
b) In case of plagiarism proved in the academic work of any nature, the
score achieved will be zero (0.0), without leading to disciplinary measures.
