DETAILED LESSON PLAN IN SCIENCE

Grade 8
A. Content Standard
1. The concept of a species.
2. The species as being further classified into a hierarchical taxonomic system.

B. Performance Standard:
To report (e.g., through a travelogue) on the activities that communities engage
in to protect and conserve endangered and economically important

C. Learning Competency:
Classify organisms using the hierarchical taxonomic system.

I. OBJECTIVES
At the end of the lesson, students should be able to:

1. Identify the phylum in animal kingdom.

2. Understand the characteristics of each phylum in animal kingdom.
3. Recognize the sample animals in which phylum they’re belong.

II. CONTENT
Topic: ANIMAL KINGDOM
References: Teaching Guide: pp. 186-190
Learner’s Guide: pp. 266-272

III. Preparatory Activities:

A. ENGAGE

Teachers’ Activity Learners’ Activity

 Opening Prayer
 Checking attendance

We already tackle the 3 Domain, Kingdom,

Archeabacteria, Eubacteria, Protist, Fungi and
plants. And last kingdom is Animals.

Before we tackle our next topic,

Let’s have games, are you familiar the 4 pics 1
word. You will determine what the animal are
they? Yes ma’am!

So let’s begins,

No. 1
SNAIL

No. 2 TIGER
No. 3

BIRDS

Alright! How will you answer those pictures by By means of looking their appearance.
means of what?

B. EXPLORE

Teachers’ Activity Learners’ Activity

The students will group into five and answer the
work sheet in 10 minutes.

I will give you 2 pictures and you will describe

this organism base on their body designed
(characteristics).

Group 1. Snail, round worm

Group 2. flatworm, jelly fish
Group 3. Sponges, erthworms
Group 4. frog, brittle star
Group 5, human, cockcroach

You will choose their characteristic on the

screen.

C. EXPLAIN

Teachers’ Activity Students’ activity

The students will answer the following guide
questions with activity sheet along in 15
minutes.
1. What name of animal does your group
have?
2. Describe the appearance of your animals
3. Where do you think they are live?
4. Do they have a backbone? (presence of
bones) YES or NO
5. what phylum does your animal belong
to?
D. ELABORATE
Teachers’ Activity Students’ activity
The teacher will use power point presentation
in the discussion of the lesson

Let’s see if your answers are correct!

But before that, let us know first the

characteristics of Animal Kingdom.

So what do animals have in common?

-Heterotrophic
- multicellular eukaryotes
-Sexually and asexual reproduction
-no cell walls
-move themselves from place to place but
some are attached to one spot.
Animal kingdom divided in 2 groups and they
are?
Invertebrates-without backbone
Vertebrates with back bone.

Now under the animal kingdom is divided into

phylum based on body designed. So what • Phylum Porifera
are those? • Phylum Coelenterata (Cnidaria)
• Phylum Platyheminthes
• Phylum Nemathelminthes (Nematode)
• Phylum Annelida
• Phylum Mollusca
• Phylum Echinodermata
• Phylum Anthropoda
• Phylum Chordata

So first phylum we tackle is porifera, and  Numerous pores have channel

What is phylum porifera?  Usually found attached to the rocks or
soil.
 Tube like or vase like
How about phylum COELENTERATA?
 They have soft bodies
 One large opening where the food
enters and leaves
 All have tentacles.
 Carries poison

Phylum PLATYHELMINTHES?
Then phylum NEMATHELMINTHES?
Next is phylum ANNELIDA?
Phylum MOLLUSCA?
And so on.
E. EVALUATE

Teachers’ Activity Students’ activity

Student will answers on ¼ paper.
Teacher will provide a short quiz to the
students. .
