Sikolohiyang Pilipino or Filipino

Psychology

- defined as the psychology rooted on the

experience, ideas, & cultural orientation of the
Filipinos. It is regulated by the Pambansang
Sikolohiyang Pilipino, (corporate name:
National Association for Sikolohiyang Pilipino,
Inc.)

“According to Virgilio Enriquez, regarded as

the father of Filipino Psychology, he got
irritated when his professors from western
countries told him that Filipinos doesn’t have
psychology course. So he went back here in
the country and proved that we have our own
thinking and psychology. Filipino’s behavior
and thinking according to their culture, beliefs,
and traditions.”

their personality and culture, which provides
Filipinos a better sense of identity that allows (The students will give an example)
them to separately identify themselves from
foreign influences.. Can you give me another
example?

In 1985, historian Zeus A.Salazar identified

four different traditions/practices upon which
Philippine psychology can be traced:

 Academic Scientific Psychology

or Akademiko-siyentipikal na
Sikolohiya: This follows the American-
oriented psychological tradition that
can be traced back to Wilhelm
Wundt in 1876. It was introduced in the
Philippines through formal American
education system in universities.
“Wundt known as the Father of Psychology
and set the first laboratory dedicated in “We can determine the behavior or mind of a
experimental psychology which is determine certain person by gathering data or research.”
the behavior or mind of the person. Aside from
laboratory, what is the other way on how you
determine the behavior or mind of a certain
person?”

“Very good!”

“Sikolohiyang Pilipino is also different based

on other traditions/practices in psychology”

 Academic Philosophic Psychology

or Akademiko-pilosopiya na Sikolohiya:
This was started by priest-professors at
the University of Santo Tomas during
the 17th century Spanish era. This
tradition originally came from the
writings of the preachers and monks in
philosophy and "pre-scientific" Spanish
elites and would later join with the
American-oriented scientific
psychology. It is a dominant tradition in
Psychology

“The Academic Philosopic Psychology started

at the University of Santo Tomas under the
leadership of priests and monks. It
emphasizes the Rational Psychology where
decision-making process that is based on
making choices according to their own
benefits.”

“Who can give an example of Academic (The students will give an example)
Philosopic Psychology?

Sikolohiya: this is the Philippine
indigenous psychology in the sense
that this includes the frame of
psychological reasoning, enculturation
practices, beliefs, and proto-clinical
practices that can be culled from
language, literature, myths, legends,
etc.

“The example here is when someone saw a

black cat, he/she think that something will bad
happen because black cat is the (The students will give an example or insights)
representation of bad luck. What are the other
examples of scenario here in this context?”

“That’s correct! Thank you for the answers.”

medikal na mga Sistema: A
psychological tradition that is closely
related to ethnic psychology. The
psycho-medical tradition that has
religion as the basis and explanation.
This includes the faith healing practices
of the babaylan and the katalonan

“Here in the Philippines, the albularyo is a

Filipino term for a witch doctor, folk healer or
medicine men. Do you have another idea what (The students will give their own idea)
are their practices?

“Some Filipinos especially those who are living

in rural areas believe that “albularyo.” Is more
effective than doctors because they are the
one who can cure the illness of the patient.”

(The Teacher will show some pictures)

“I will show you some pictures and identify

which of them is one of the four traditions in
Filipino Psychology and explain it why ”

“Ma’am that is Ethnic Psychology.”

“Because we Filipinos have a belief that if you
