CHESTNUT DRIVE

REVIEW
RESULTS
1. To what extent do you think you have been successful?
This negotiation was very successful because both side found a win-win agreement and nobody
felt disappointed at the end. Mr. Murphy accepted all the concerns very quickly and we were
very satisfied by all the solutions. In our team, we decided to have one person speaking for all
the group and when it was necessary, on a specific issue, the person concerned could help the
spokesperson.

2. To what extent do you think the other team has been successful?
The other team was successful as they were able to convince Mr. Murphy to listen to their issues
and interests. Their way of discussing the problem with Mr. Murphy was more persuasive in
nature.

3. Do you think your agreement is fair and long lasting?

Yes, agreement is fair and long lasting as it focused on long term benefits like Fence
construction, with lights, safety of children, organize meetings with the workers and drivers that
don’t behave well, sanitation and hygiene factors that were lacking, and also parking issue.

PREPARATION
1. What were the success and difficulties you come across?
Success included the time when every member of the team was introducing their given roles and
discussed their problems from construction in a very polite manner and made all the members
understand about their problems along with the solutions in their mind.

Difficulties included the noise coming from the other team’s discussion which was not that easy
to make one’s voice heard during the preparation for the negotiation. Also, all the members were
having different negotiation style.

2. Did you define your strategies, your partner’s strategies, objectives, plans and interest
clearly?
We were able to identified the partner’s strategies, objectives, plans and interest clearly due to
which issues like lightening, safety, hygiene, etc. were resolved.

3. To what extent do you find them useful?

They were useful because we were able to know the other parties interests, plans and strategies
too and at last to have an integrative negotiation.
4. To what extent did were you aware of the strategies, the objectives, plans and interests of
the other party?
We were not aware of the strategies, objectives, plans and strategies of other party ( Mr.
Murphy) as my team focused mainly on safety issues and bad behavior of drivers. They did not
knew about the cost issue which will increase and will be bear by other party.

5. What effect did it have it on you?

It effected more in a positive way as it was a really great training to work with people who have
different negotiation styles as it can help me learn how to improve my own.
CONDUCTING THE NEGOTIATION
1. What success and difficulties did you come across?
Success included the delivery of our issues and interests where in our team, we decided to have
one person speaking for all the group (the pensioner) and when it was necessary, on a specific
issue, the person concerned could help the spokesperson.

Difficulties included time management as we were not able to communicate one or two issues in
the presence of Mr. Murphy. It was somewhere difficult for lights as he kept explaining to us
how expensive it would be. Also, all the members were having different negotiation style.

2. What did you notice about the other team?

I noticed that the other team was very patient and calm. They listened to the problems of
residents and try to solve their problems by keeping their own interests in mind. At some point of
time, it was also difficult to convince them. They were clear about their interests, plans and
strategies.

3. Were you surprised at any stage of negotiation?

Yes, I was surprised when Mr. Murphy said that residents should control their children and do
not send them outside their houses. It was also surprised to know that initially Mr. Murphy was
not agreed to put lights due extra cost.

4. What effect did it have on you?

As a taxi driver when Mr. Murphy says that he can’t do anything about the problem of noise
during the daytime, then it was surprising as I can’t change my job shift from night to day
because of construction work.
