GAS PRESSURE

Gases are the only state of matter that can be compressed very tightly or
expanded to fill a very large space. Pressure is a force exerted by the substance.
The pressure of a gas is the force that the gas exerts on the walls of its container.
Gas Pressure is created when a gas molecule colides elastically with the walls
ofnits container.
Barometer
Is a scientific instrument that is used to measure air pressure in a certain
environment.
U-Tube Manometer
A simple device to measure gas pressure. It is usually contains water or
mercury in a U-shaped tube.

VOLUME
Volume is a measure of the amount of space that a substance or an object
takes up. The basic SI unit for volume is the cubic meter (m3), but smaller volumes
may be measured in cm3, and liquids may be measured in liters (L) or milliliters
(mL)

Robert Boyle
Was an Anglo-Irish naturl philosopher,chemist,physicist,and inventor. Boyle is
largely regarded today as the first modern chemist.
He discovered a law to find the volume of a gas when pressure changes and its
called Boyle's Law.

Boyle's Law
States that the volume of a gas is inversely proportional to the pressure of a
gas when the temperature is held constant.
Example Problems

1.A diver blows a 0.75 air bubble 10 meters under water. As the bubble rises to
the surface, the pressure decreases from 2.25 atm to 1.03 atm. Calculate the
volume of the bubble at the surface.
Formula: P1V1=P2V2
V2= P1V1/P2
V2= (2.25 atm)x(0.75L)/ (1.03 atm)
V2= 1.6L

2. Under a pressure of o.988 atm, helium fills a balloon to 1.00L. What would the
pressure be if the volume of the balloons stretched to 2.00L?
Formula:P1V1=P2V2
P2= P1V1/V2
P2=(0.988ATM)x(1.00L)/(2.00L)
P2= 0.494atm

3. The volume of the air in the marshmallows blaster is 450mL. The pressure is
1.00 amt. If I decrease the volume to 50mL,what will be the new pressure be?
Formula: P1V2=P2V2
P2=P1V1/V2
P2=(1.00atm)x(450mL)/(50mL)
P2= 9.00atm
