Chapter 1

THE PROBLEM AND ITS BACKGROUND

The researchers conduct a research about the exposure of adolescents in

pornography at Malinta, Valenzuela City. This chapter contains a Introduction,

Statement of the problem, Scope and Delimitation, Significance of a study and

Definition of terms.

Introduction

Pornography, often colloquially referred to as porn, is any sexually explicit

material—written, visual, or otherwise—that is intended to sexually arouse. While

pornography has existed in some form for millennia, today it’s most readily

available online—though it continues to be widely available in literature, audio,

magazines, and more.Pornography has significant effects during all stages of

family life.. for a child exposed to pornography causes stress and increases the

risk for developing negative attitude about the nature and purpose of human

sexuality. Two primary ways children and teens will be exposed to pornography

are 1) stumbling upon it by accident and 2) Hearing about it from a family

member or friend. Stumbling upon it will often occur because of an errant google

search or because they it stored on a device they are using. Errant searches

definitely top the list here, odds are you have done this yourself. You go to

Google to search for a person or movie (or almost anything) and start looking

through the results to which you find a link to a pornographic video, image, or

page.

4
Another interesting place where children will often stumble upon

pornography is in their email (if they have one). This is pretty common when you

think about how much spam email is sent out. If you have a young child

receiving a bunch of spam–even if it is labeled as such–there is a high chance

that they will end up clicking the email and becoming exposed to pornographic

content. In fact, Symantec, released a poll in 2003 that indicates out of one

thousand youths under 18, one in five of them opened spam emails sent to

them.

Lastly, if you (or a spouse, child, friend, etc.) have a search history that

contains pornographic material it will make it even easier for your children to

have access to pornography when using your device. Even more, if you have

downloaded any risqué (or legitimate) pornographic content onto your computer

there is a high chance that your kids will find a way to that media–children are

wizards with technology. This obviously is a pretty detrimental find for a child as

they will likely see you as a role model and will want to emulate your actions.

Thus, finding pornography on a loved one’s device will likely lead your child to

want to do the same. The researches conduct this research to describe the

exposure of adolescence in Pornography. After that, the researchers can give

solution to their problem, the internet is not a safe place for adolescence to be

roaming around. Pornography and predators seem to be lurking everywhere, just

waiting to hook your adolescence into their schemes. It is becoming increasingly

important for parents to know the facts about their teenagers time spent online,

as well as how to approach this topic with them.

protocol. The data will be collected and processed through Interview and analysis

of data. The output of the study, is the researchers expect the adolescents

exposed to pornography to answer the questions, provided by the researchers,

with honesty.

Statement of the Problem

The purpose of this phenomenological study is to describe the exposure to

pornography of adolescents at Malinta, Valenzuela City.

This study aims to answer the following questions:

1. What are the reasons of Adolescents exposure to pornography?

1.1. What are the changes of Adolescents when they are exposed to

pornography?

1.2. What are the different disadvantages of Adolescents being exposed to

pornography?

2. How do the Adolescents respondents get exposed to pornography?

2.1. Who influenced the Adolescents exposed in pornography?

2.2. How long Adolescents get exposed from pornography?

2.3. What are the ways of Adolescents to access pornography

Objectives of the Study

1. To identify the reasons of adolescents exposure to pornography

2. To understand the adolescents exposed to pornography.

Significance of the Study

The study of exposure to pornography of adolescents can be the way to the

person to be aware what situation they have. The research goal is to know the

reason and to understand the adolescents exposed to pornography. This study

can help the adolescents to be aware what will happen if they’re exposed to

pornography.

The result of the study would benefit the following:

7
Adolescents. They’re the main concern in this research. This study can help

them to be more responsible in making decisions and to help them be matured to

pornographic things

Parents/guardians. In this study, parents will understand how adolescence is

being exposed to pornography. This research can help them guide their children

to be more matured toward pornography.

Health professional. This study can be an instrument to inform them for what

are the reasons why adolescents are exposed to pornography.

Researchers. They may be able to use the result of this study in further

research, similar to what the study is.

Scope and Delimitation of the Study

The general intend of this phenomenological study is to describe how it

affects the adolescents if they’re exposed to pornography at Malinta, Valenzuela

City, with the focus on adolescents health.

The study limited its number of researchers participants, fifteen (15), male,

age between 10-19 years old.

This study yearn to identify on how the researchers can provide the solution

to adolescents exposure to pornography, currently facing, and the problem that

may come into future, after the researchers knows the reason of adolescents

exposed to pornography.

8
Definition of Terms

For easy understanding of some terms used , the following are defined

conceptually and operationally .

Adolescence- any person between ages 10 and 19

Exposure- The state of being exposed to contact with something

Pornography- Printed or visual material containing the explicit description or

display at sexual organs or activity, intended to simulate erotic rather than

aesthetic or emotional feelings

REVIEW OF RELATED LITERATURE AND STUDIES

pornography, exposure of adolescents in pornography, statistics.Reasons of

adolescents exposed to pornography, the harms of pornography exposure

among the adolescents, the result of exposure of adolescents in pornography,

how to avoid the exposure of adolescents in pornography and the synthesis of

this chapter.

Defining the Exposure of Adolescents in Pornography

According to Journal of Adolescence Volume 32, Issue 3, (2009),

Adolescents frequent users of the internet for pornography found to differ in

many social characteristics from the group that used the internet for information,

social communication and entertainment. Weak ties to mainstream social

institutions were characteristic of the former group but not of the latter. X- rated

material consumers proved to be a distinct sub- group at risk of deviant

behaviour

Exposure of Adolescents Pornography, Statistics.

According to Jacob Beck for men and for women, pornography facts,

preventions (2018), 9 out of 10 Boys and 6 out of 10 Girls will be exposed to

pornography before the age of 18

Reasons of Adolescents Exposed to Pornography

10
According to Jacob Beck for men and for women, pornography facts,

prevention (2018), The reasons of adolescents exposed to pornography are

because of tumbling upon it by accident and hearing about it from a family

member or friend.

The harms of Pornography Exposure among the Adolescents

According to Michael Flood (2009), exposure to pornography is routine

among the children and young people, with a range of notable and often

troubling effects. Exposure to pornography helps to contain young people’s

adherence to sexist and unhealthy notions of sex and relationships and,

especially among Boys and young men who are frequent consumers of

pornography, including of more violent materials, consumption intensifies

attitudes supportive of sexual coercion and increases their likelihood of

perpetrating assault

The result of Adolescents Exposed in Pornography

According to Jacob Beck for men and for women, pornography facts,

prevention (2018), The exposure to pornography results in a hyper- sexual view

of the world. The subjects tended to have high rate of devaluing marriage; they

are twice as likely to believe that marriage is unimportant. One reason

researchers give is that children see their parents with multiple sexual partners

both in and out of a marriage. Thus, they are open to multiple sexual partners

before marriage as well as infidelity in a committed relationship

How to avoid the Exposure of Adolescents in Pornography

11
According to Tasha Rube (2019), We can avoid the exposure of

Adolescents in pornography, by blocking pornography from your browser, or

prevent your from accessing pornography online.

METHODOLOGY

This research showcase the description of research design, population

and sampling technique, research respondents, research locale, the research

instruments and techniques, data gathering procedures and data analysis

procedures.

Research Design

To attain the objective of this study, the researchers will use the

Phenomenology Research Design. Phenomenology is an approach to qualitative

research that focuses on the commonality of a lived experience within a

particular group. The fundamental goal of the approach is to arrive at a

description of the nature of the particular phenomenon (Creswell, 2013).We use

phenomenology research design, to seek reality from individuals' narratives of

their experiences and feelings, and to produce in-depth descriptions of the

phenomenon.

Population and sampling Techniques

The population of this study are adolescence individuals age 10-19 who

are exposed to pornography. For the purpose of this study, the researchers will

invite 15 respondents to participate, to know the reasons of exposure and how

they get exposed to pornography. This sampling is called purposive sampling,

based on the study of Ashley Crossman (2017), A purposive sample is a non-

probability sample that is selected based on characteristics of a population and

13
the objective of the study. Purposive sampling is different from convenience

sampling and is also known as judgemental, selective, or subjective sampling.

Research Respondents

The respondents of the study are the 15 adolescents exposed to

pornography from Malinta, Valenzuela City.

Research Locale

This research is intended only at the Barangay of Malinta, Valenzuela

City. The research study will conducted in this barangay because the problem

about the exposure of the adolescents in pornography is really happening in the

adolescents of Malinta, Valenzuela City, and there are a lot of adolescents who

are having a hard time because they are exposed to pornography.

Research Instruments and Techniques

The study will use Open-ended-questionnaire, specifically, the interview

protocol, to make the research reliable. The interview protocol can help the

researchers to discover the adolescents thoughts and feeling about their

exposure in pornography. The interview protocol can help the researchers to

obtain and record the answers to their questions, and to make analysis,

recording and coding the data easier and faster.

14
Data gathering procedures

To gather the data needed for this study the researchers will use the

interview method. To do this, the researchers will select and contact 15

adolescents as respondents to participate in this study. Before the interview will

be conducted, the researchers will seek for the approval of the parents/guardian

of the adolescents. Second, after selecting and contacting the 15 adolescence,

the researchers will have a one on one interview with them, this is called

Individual Interview. Lastly, after gathering all the data, the researchers can now

proceed to their study.

Data Analysis and Procedures

The analysis that the researchers will use to analyse the data is

Phenomenological analysis. The researchers decide that they will use

Phenomenological analysis because it is the most compatible to their data. The

researchers will determine the perception of the adolescents exposed to

pornography.

The structure of phenomena is the major finding of any descriptive

phenomenological inquiry. This structure is based upon the essential meanings

that are present in the descriptions of the participants and is determined both by

analysis (as detailed below), and also by your (intuitive) insights. As an overview

of how to analyse phenomenological research, we will look at method of analysis

as described by Kleiman (2014). Similar processes occur in other types of

qualitative research.

15
Step 1 Familiarization With The Data

The researchers will read the interview transcript in its entirety in order to

get a global sense of the whole. Read the interview transcript a second time -

this time more slowly - in order to divide the data into meaningful sections or

units.

Step 2 Highlighting and Noting of Important Patterns

The researcher will integrate those sections/units that you have identified

as having a similar focus or content and make sense of them. Subject integrated

meaningful sections/units to a process that is known as free imaginative

variation.

Step 3 Data Sorting

The researchers will elaborate on findings - this includes descriptions of

the essential meanings that were discovered through the process of free

imaginative variation. Revisiting the raw data descriptions again in order to justify

your interpretations of both the essential meanings and the general

structure. The researchers will really do have to prove that you can substantiate

the accuracy of all findings by reference to the raw data.

Step 4 Review the Themes

Once the researchers have completed the analysis of data, the

researcher will follow this with a critical analysis of work within research study.

This critical analysis will include verification that:

16
a) concrete, detailed descriptions have been obtained from the participants

b) the phenomenological reduction has been maintained throughout the analysis

c) essential meanings have been discovered

d) a structure has been articulated

e) the raw data has verified the results
