ASME CRITERIA FOR WELDING PREHEATING

Does anyone know if ASME code have a criteria or calculate that use equivalent carbon factor...

Usually you can found tables but simetime i have seen several cases where that information is

different that metallurgical criteria for welding preheating... For example in 335 gr P1... Thanks

in advance..

Dirk Kölbl This depends on the Code Section you are looking at.

Are you asking for boilers, vessels, piping, nukes?

Jeremie Ducher Non mandatory appendix R in section VIII-1 provides recommandations for

preheat temperature

Donald Weaver, P.E. Are you looking for preheat recommendations, or CE formulas?

Ahmed Hafez Depends on design code

Jerry Davila What grade of material are you welding? I can send you a data sheet.

RAMESH TR Please get the technical data brochure from steel supplier, lots of inputs are

available on materials besides welding which will be useful for the fabrication process.

Alejandro Soto Espinoza Thanks pals...

Aref Novin Seferian formula says: Preheating Temp. (C) = 350. Square Root(Cequiv. - 0.25)

Aref Novin Several methods can be used to calculate the theoretical preheating

temperature. We shall use the following Seferian formula:

Preheating T° = 350x SQRT( (C) - 0.25)

(C) represents total carbon equivalent. It is the sum of chemical carbon equivalent

(CC) and carbon equivalent and thickness (CET).

0.25 is the upper limit for carbon for weldable carbon steels.

(CE) = 0.005 x (Substrate thickness in mm) x (CC)

(C) = (CC) + (CET)

Pedro Roman Alex here I leave a wrc I hope it is of your interest, however remember that the

control of the rate heating and rato coolingr is based on what properties you want to obtain and

the type of material you are working, some codes mark some recommendations for preheat.

Christopher Wright P.E. This is part of your weld procedure and varies with material

thicknessand grade. The Code specify weld procedure parameters. You might have some luck

checking with major suppliers of welding consumables like Lincoln Electric. Some large

materials suppliers like raw steel suppliers may get involved with this sort of thing. But pre-

heat and interpass temperatures are specified along with a weld procedure.

Christopher Wright P.E. Typo alert!! Second sentence 'The Code specify weld procedure

parameters' should read 'The Code does not specify weld procedure parameters

Juan Carlos Morales Verifica en ASME secc. VIII Div. 1, UCL-66 (a reserva de verificar) ahí

puedes encontrar los requisitos de precalentamiento de materiales de acuerdo al No-P,

espesores y carbono equivalente. Saludos.

Ian Felce If you're looking to calculate the pre-heat temperature required for welding of this

steel based on thickness, arc energy, consumable hydrogen rating and carbon equivalent ,

European Standard EN 1011-1 is a good one to use for your WPS.

Karthikeyan Periakaruppan Preheating temp.calculation decided by various factors

chemical, physical analysis, degree of restrain by parts welded together. There are mandatory

rules and non mandatory guidelines in Sec-8 code.First refer non-mandatory Appendix-R also

you can refer B31.3 code rules 300.2-page-7 and 330.Since your question specifically request

ASME code rule .
