Questions
1. WHAT EVIDENCE IS THERE THAT MARTIN HAD
FEELINGS OF INFERIORITY?
Martin had the feelings of inferiority by his humble beginnings
because he was embarrassed by his ethnic background, his
parent’s lack of education and his lack of material goods. He also
did not want to recall what kind of childhood memories he has.
All things were mentioned are the reasons why he had the feeling
S NITRAM

inferiority.
2. ACCORDING TO ADLER’S THEORY, HOW DID
FEELINGS OF INFERIORITY INFLUENCE MARTIN’S
'

BEHAVIOR? WHAT INFLUENCE DID THESE

BELIEFS OF INFERIORITY HAVE ON HIS STRIVING
ESA

FOR SUPERIORITY?
According to Adler’s theory, being inferior can influence you
or your behavior in different ways, in Martin’s case, the
feeling of inferiority caused him to strive more for
superiority. Martin was influenced by it that made him
ashamed of his family and his life back then and determined
to escape from this kind of life. To compensate for the
inferiority he experienced in his youth, his mother's
resentment towards him, and his father’s pride that caused
C

them hunger and suffering, Martin was driven to achieve

superiority. He was deprived of a lot of things especially
love from his own parents and this made the huge impact
for him to use success, money and fame to fill those needs.
He was so resolute to escape inferiority that caused him to
lose the essence of his work, and to genuinely cooperate
with people to help them.

3. ACCORDING TO ADLER’S THEORY, WHAT WAS
MARTIN’S GOAL? WHAT WAS MARTIN’S UNIQUE
STYLE OF LIFE THAT COULD BE USED TO ACHIEVE
THIS GOAL? PROVIDE EVIDENCE FOR YOUR
ANSWER.
In Martin’s case, his goal is to rise above his early station in life
and he actually did. He became a well known lawyer and achieve
S NITRAM

a more successful and sophisticated life but before any of those

success his style of life before is not the same with what he has
right now. His family came from a medium sized city and he
'

began a humble beginning in his early age. His father is a

carpenter while his mother is staying in their house with his
siblings. His striving force in wanting to be successful is from the
ESA

way he was treated before. His mother is from a middle class

unlike his father. His mother got pregnant which is him at that
time and that is also the reason why his mother and father got
married. Not because they want to but because that is what his
grandparents want. His mother resent him because of that. He
never felt the love and care from his mother. He never felt proud
of his humble beginnings and that is also the reason why he
really tried his best to be successful.

4. DOES MARTIN HAVE A HIGH OR A LOW LEVEL
OF SOCIAL INTEREST? WHAT DOES THIS IMPLY
ABOUT HIS PERSONALITY AND ADJUSTMENT?
WHAT IS THE CAUSE OF THIS LEVEL OF SOCIAL
INTEREST?
Due to the sufferings Martin had, he had lost interest in
people. He grew up with little to no friends and had such
S NITRAM

unyielding determination to rise from their family’s

adversity. He has low level of social interest and this
influenced his actions and his very personality as he grew
'

older. Martin never even participated in school activities

and grew up to be distant or with lack of female
ESA

companionship. His mindset of having wealth and stable life

was firm and unwavering. His social interest even declined
when he had his job in a well-known law firm only to quit
after being dissatisfied with the politics of this firm. He did
not even bother making adjustments, instead he started his
own firm. He even neglected offers of being director from
other organization and other volunteer works for the
community.

5. WHAT DID ADLER SAY ABOUT BIRTH ORDER

THAT WOULD APPLY TO MARTIN’S LIFE?
According to Adler the first born children are likely to have
intensified feelings of power and superiority and over
protective techniques but it was not present in Martin’s case
because sometimes his basic physical need were not met.
Instead of being the center of attraction in the family,
Martin often felt alone and commented at one point that
neither of his parents loved him. Being the oldest child, he
developed the self centered style of life and luckily he
adopt this kind of life because as a well known Criminal
Lawyer he left to start a new firm of his own.

Questions
1. HOW COULD HORNEY’S CONCEPT OF BASIC
ANXIETY EXPLAIN MARTIN’S EXAGGERATED
INDEPENDENCE? WHAT MECHANISMS ARE USED
BY MARTIN TO HELP HIM DEAL WITH BASIC
ANXIETY? HOW DOES ADLER’S CONCEPT OF
SOCIAL INTEREST COMPARE WITH HORNEY’S
S NITRAM

TREND OF MOVING AWAY FROM PEOPLE?

Martin's hatred towards his parents was repressed back
'

when he was just a child, and enventually turned into a

motivation to work hard himself to get himself high that
what his parents had when they were young, his
ESA

independence back then was a culture to him because he

was never used in his parents being there for him, he didnt
asked anybody for help. Martins neglected style of life was
brought up until he was working he had nobody when he
was working hard for himself the regression he had on his
childhood development was traumatic experience for him,
despite all of the hatred he got from his mother of being the
first born that he nevrer wished he detached himself from
C

people especially from his family he moved himself aways

from them, he had self sufficiency and independence
because at such a young age they were exposed to a hard
life and he never wanted that for himself so he worked hard
for it.

Questions
2. HOW DO ADLER’S SAFEGUARDING TENDENCIES
COMPARE WITH HORNEY’S NEUROTIC TRENDS?
EXPLAIN MARTIN’S LACK OF RELATIONSHIPS
USING THESE TWO CONCEPTS.
In Adlers’s safeguarding tendencies, it said there that it is a
S NITRAM

survival mechanism wherein an individual use it to protect

themselves from others criticism. In the given case of martin
he was not able to enjoy his childhood. He was not able to
'

feel loved by her mother. As he grew older he focused on his

goals and how he would get out of his family’s humble
background. In this Martin is keeping his real self and what
ESA

he shows to others is what will pleas them. In connection to

Horney’s neurotic trends, since martin was not able to
experience his needs in his childhood he developed basic
hostility towards his parents which turned to basic anxiety
wherein he felt isolation in the world. In this case it became
hard for martin to build relationship towards others.

3. HOW DOES ADLER’S SUPERIORITY COMPLEX

C

COMPARE WITH HORNEY’S CONCEPT OF

IDEALIZED SELF?
Alder’s superiority complex and Horney’s concept of
idealized self have points of comparison by which differs
each theory from one another. Alder’s superiority complex is
a behavior that suggest that self is greater than the other.
In Adler’s theory, self is considered superior to cover
inferiority. However, in Horney’s concept of idealized self, it
is the idea of oneself of what kind of person the self
visualized. Going along with Adler’s theory, it opposed
inferiorities with missions to overlap levels of other people,
while in the theory of Horney, it is more on the imagination
of oneself and making it a motivation to improve the self in
many aspects.

Questions
4. ACCORDING TO BOWLBY AND AINSWORTH,
WHAT TYPE OF ATTACHMENT STYLE DOES
MARTIN DISPLAY? EXPLAIN. WHAT WOULD BE
THE SOURCE OF THIS TYPE OF ATTACHMENT
STYLE?
S NITRAM

According to Bowlby and Ainsworth the type of attachment

style that Martin does is the Dismissive-Avoidant or
Anxious-Avoidant Attachment people with this attachment
'

style generally keep their distance from others. They may

feel that they don’t need human connection to survive the
possible source of this is because at the early age both of
ESA

his parent does not give him affection or show him some
love and it leads to this he became an independent person,
and thrive to life because at young age he already saw
what life is that is why Martin determined to have a
successful life and insist on maintaining his independence
and isolation from others because he saw his father that
does not want help from other people because of pride that
he had. These individuals are often able to shut down
C

emotionally when a potentially hurtful scenario arises, such

as a voluntary work.
