A new housing project is to be built in Bukit Melawati in Selangor. Discuss the effects of
this project on the environment. Propose corrective measures to reduce the negative
impacts to ensure Engineering for Sustainability.

The effects of construction house.

1) Destruction of habitat, ecosystems and biodiversity

Various species of fauna and flora are threatened with extinction and destruction as a
result of extreme logging. When the forests are destroyed, the principal function of the
main producers will also be destroyed. Lives that depend on plants such as herbivores
will lose their food sources. For example, elephants, deer, monkeys and others. Damage
to ecosystems such as the destruction of the food chain, biotic and abiotic component
energy cycles will eventually disrupt local ecological balance. Extreme ecological
disruption will occur when forests are destroyed

2) Destroying soil nutrient distribution

In addition, the effects of logging activities will also destroy nutrient distribution in the soil. Under
natural conditions nutrient distribution will occur completely and completely under the forest tree.
However, in the event of deforestation, the soil chain and nutrients will disappear quickly as surface
runoff increases dramatically in gondola forests. The process of photosynthesis will also be disrupted,
thus destroying the distribution of nutrients.

3) Climate change or local warming

Rising temperatures due to the absence of sunscreen, and excess carbon dioxide gas in the atmosphere.
This will either reduce the rainfall or change the pattern of rainfall that often results in drought
phenomena. The reduction of air humidity due to its function of releasing water vapor into the air
through the process of transpiration is lost or reduced. The surrounding air is dry and the weather is hot.
Forests can no longer function to reduce temperatures by trapping the sun and releasing water vapor
through the sweat process.

4) Increasing erosion rates

The impact of logging also contributes to soil erosion. When the forest is cut down, the roots of the tree
no longer hold the ground beneath the surface. When there is no root to hold the soil, the soil structure
becomes loose. When it rains, the water flow will cause the soil structure to become soft and smooth.
The soft, sloping ground moves down the slopes and landslides. The landslide has not only devastated
the forest ecosystem, but has also endangered human life, as it has been happening on International
Hill.

5) Impact on hydrological systems

Logging also causes the hydrological cycle to become unstable. Logging also reduces the rate of water
infiltration into the soil and thus lowers the soil water level. This will affect the catchment area and
water supply to rivers, lakes, ponds and marshes. Logging also contributes to the rate of surface runoff
that brings large amounts of silt and mud into the river, which in turn promotes flood events.

The way to decrease the environmental effect of construction house.

1) Limit Fuel Usage

Construction firm’s biggest negative impact on the environment is caused by the burning of fossil fuels,
like gas and diesel. Every construction project result in these gas emissions of carbon dioxide, methane
and other waste products that pollute the air and are believed to contribute to global warming. In order
to limit fuel usage:

 Minimize haul distances

 Reduce vehicle idling time
 Use greener, alternative fuel sources
 Use hybrid equipment

By striving to limit your construction project’s fuel usage, you can help decrease negative emission and
pollutants and improve air quality.

2) Reduce Noise

Construction noise is a major source of noise pollution. Most of this noise is produced by machinery in
site preparation, demolition, and landscaping. Many construction sites are located near homes and
businesses and can noise complaints might be likely. Be sure, when beginning a construction project, to
be considerate and adhere to any local construction time restrictions. Many people might not
appreciate work and loud construction noises beginning at six A.M. on a Saturday. Another good idea is
to send a letter to neighbors before beginning work to alert them to how long the project will last and
what to expect.

3) Properly Dispose of Waste

In 2014, there was over 534 million tons of construction material waste in the United States. Demolition
waste makes up 90% of total debris, and much of this waste is disposed of in landfills or through
incineration. Both these methods harm the environment. By salvaging, reusing and recycling existing
materials, you can cut down on materials harming our precious earth. Hardware, appliances, and
fixtures can be recycled or reused. These can be used on future projects or donated to those who need
them. Brick and concrete can be recycled and used as fill or driveway bedding, and metals and wood are
valuable commodities that can be recycled.

4) Utilize Reusable Technology

There are a lot of green building options that help you decrease a negative environmental impact. For
example, inflatable water dams help combat erosion, water runoff, and prevents sedimentation. While
sandbags and traditional dewatering solutions are costly and time-consuming, inflatable water dams are
reusable and take up little space. They are easier to install and environmentally friendly by using existing
water already on your worksite.

5) Expedite Your Project

By accelerating your construction project, you reduce traffic disturbances and also reduce associated
emissions and fuel costs. Establish firm completion goals and implement these measures to stay on
track. Expediting the construction process helps reduce noise pollution, as well as cutting back on traffic
duration and improves safety zones.
