When the Japanese forces are attacking the Philippines the Filipinos and Americans were forced to

defend the country. They are not outnumbered but outgunned. They have weapons that are from world
war one and grenades that are not exploding. This force the American and Filipino troops to retreat and
go to bataan. Without backup, without resupply, only having starving men with failing weapons leads to
the surrender of American and Filipino soldiers. The surrendering troops is approximately 75,000
people at Bataan. This was the largest surrender in the history of the United States army. After
surrender on April 9, 1945 they were forced to march to the north, which will be known as the death
march. They were forced to march approximately 65 miles from Marileves to Camp O’ Donnell for 6 days
straight. The American and Filipino experience the wrath and brutality of the Japanese in this march. If a
solder is exhausted and cannot keep up, that soldier will be bayoneted or will be killed by gun fire, So if
you stop walking you will die, If you try to escape you will die. They even torture the soldiers by making
them stand in the direct sunlight for hours and if they move they will be killed. The Japanese does not
feed the soldiers. They starve the soldiers to their death. Only once in that 6 days journey that the
soldiers were given the opportunity to eat. They also didn’t allow the soldiers to drink water. Even when
they come across a river or a pipe with flowing water they wouldn’t let the soldiers drink. If a solder ran
to get some water they will be immediately be killed by shot or by being bayoneted. The solders are not
even allowed to stop and defecate. If they stop they will be executed. The Japanese even murder and
torture soldiers just for fun. That is how cruel this Japanese soldiers are. Some soldiers cannot handle
the pain that they committed suicide. The remaining soldiers that are left are forced to march and bury
their fallen comrades. A lot of lifeless bodies can be found on the road. After 5 days of walking and
having approximately 4,000 soldiers dead they arrived at a train station in San Fernando were they were
stuffed inside a boxcars. Inside the boxcars they were packed liked sardines. It’s so full of people that
you cannot even sit down. And since it is full of people it is very hot inside. If you want to sleep you will
sleep standing up and if you want to go to the bathroom you will just have to do it where you are
standing. A lot of people died inside the box cars because of heat and suffocation. On April 14, 1942
they arrived at Camp O’ Donnell the surviving soldiers are all malnourished, tired, has a disease, and
broken. They are physically, emotionally, and mentally damaged. The death toll was an estimate of
5,000 – 10,000 soldiers. Inside the camp thousand more died because of torture, disease, exhaustion
and starvation.
