Message from the C o o r d i na t o r

On behalf of the Faculty of Natural Sciences, I would like to thank you

for your interest in our programmes of study.

The guide book gives you information on admission requirements for the
Diploma in Laboratory Technology (DLT) Programme conducted by our
Faculty along with information on the curriculum, study methods, tuition
fees and dates of registration. This guide book tells you about the support
and facilities the University can offer to enable you to study
independently. Hence our advice to you is to read the guide book before
you apply for the programme.

A high efficiency in a laboratory will require knowledgeable workers

who are capable of maintaining quality work in the laboratory while
ensuring the safety. The laboratory you are working can be a research
laboratory, a quality control laboratory, a lab in a university or a school
laboratory. The responsibilities and the work expected from you may be
slightly different from one another, may be specific, but the common
tasks will be more or less the same. This Diploma programme is
designed to develop knowledge and skills which are very much required
to work efficiently in any laboratory such as research, teaching, biology,
chemistry, physics, engineering and other related areas.

I wish you all success and hope you will achieve your career goals
through distance education at the OUSL.

Dr. W.H.M.A.T. Herath

Senior Lecturer
Department of Botany

GENERAL INFORMATION

The University
The Open University of Sri Lanka (OUSL) is the premier national
University in the country which offers Degree, Diploma, Certificate
Programmes and other courses through OPEN & DISTANCE
LEARNING methodology. Established in 1980, under the Universities
Act No. 16 of 1978 and OUSL Ordinance No. 1 of 1990, it has the same
legal and academic status as any other national university in Sri Lanka.

The OUSL provides opportunities for any person over 18 years of age to
register as a student for a Programme/Course of their choice.
Due to the nature of its teaching methodology and infrastructure, The
OUSL is able to serve a large student population scattered throughout the
island. Currently, over 30,000 are registered in its six Faculties: Natural
Sciences, Engineering Technology, Humanities & Social Sciences,
Education, Health Sciences and Management studies. The University
serves its student population via a network of 9 regional centres and 18
study centres (Table 5). The Central campus and the Colombo Regional
Centre (CRC) are situated in Nawala. The other eight regional centres are
situated at Kandy (KRC), Matara (MRC), Jaffna (JRC), Anuradhapura
(ARC), Batticaloa (BRC), Badulla, Kurunegala and Ratnapura.

4
Faculty of Natural Sciences
The Faculty of Natural Sciences conducts a variety of study programmes
including the Degree Programmes leading to B.Sc General/Special
Degree and several Diploma/Certificate programmes.
The Faculty functions under the leadership of the Dean who is the
administrative and the academic Head. It also has a large number of
experienced and qualified teaching staff to help the students in their
studies. The six academic departments of the Faculty are: Botany,
Chemistry, Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics and Zoology.

The Study System

The study system of the OUSL is based on distance learning methods. It
is different to the conventional study system most of you are familiar
with. Regular attendance at the University is not required. Therefore, this
system is well suited for those of you who are employed or engaged with
other commitments.

5
Student learning is facilitated through carefully prepared printed course
material, suitable for self-learning. Printed course material is
supplemented with audio visual and online learning material. There will
be two semesters in an academic year and the courses are divided into
the two semesters. A calendar (activity schedule) for each semester will
be given to you at the beginning of each semester so that you can plan
your studies. Your progress in courses is evaluated at different time
intervals using a variety of assessment methods such as assignment tests
and final examinations.

Support for Learning

At the OUSL, students are supported in many ways as described below.

(a) Counseling

You will be supported by academic staff members on selecting courses at

the time of registration and thereafter on other academic matters
throughout your studies. The Faculty has student counselors to help you
overcome any general problems.

6
(b) Day Schools

Day schools are interactive sessions. You are given an opportunity to

meet the academic staff (your course teachers) and discuss problems
you may come across in studying. In addition to day schools, we
provide face-to-face support through workshops, tutorial sessions and
practical classes.

Each course will have about 2- 4 day schools (one day school is about 3-
4 hrs.) which will be on week days/week ends.

(c) Supplementary Online Support for Courses

In order to give you additional help and also to get you familiarized with
modern learning trends and tools, certain courses might be supplemented
with an online component. Once you register for a course with an online
component, you will be informed and advised on how to access and use
it.

7
(d) Laboratory Facilities

Evaluation

Your progress in courses are evaluated at different time intervals using a

variety of assessment methods such as assignment tests and final
examinations.

Continuous Assessment tests and Final Examination

Continuous assessment tests are designed to motivate you to study with a
plan which lead to better performance. Continuous assessment tests
(NBT/OBT) will be held for each course. An Overall Continuous
Assessment Mark (OCAM) will be calculated from continuous
assessment tests (NBT/OBT), home assignments, practical reports and
practical tests.

There will be two final examinations for the courses having laboratory
classes – Practical and Theory, which will be computed to give a Final

17
examination mark (FEM).

If a student obtains a minimum OCAM and a final examination mark (as

decided by the Faculty which offers the course), then both OCAM and
final examination mark will be considered in calculating the Overall
Mark.

Therefore, it is advisable to sit for the continuous assessment tests and

obtain the acceptable OCAM. The OCAM mark will be valid only for
two years including the year in which the OCAM was obtained.

Postponing Sitting the Final Examination

Students if they wish, can postpone sitting the final examination for
another year from the year of obtaining the OCAM. However, such
postponement is strongly discouraged.

Overall Mark and Grade

The overall mark will be calculated from the final examination mark and
OCAM. The Overall Grade for each course will be determined by the
Overall Mark.

Re-Registration

Students who have not successfully completed all the courses will have
to re-register again. They can be either repeat students/re-sit students or
students who have to register for the courses which have not been taken
at the registration.

Repeat Students
Students who are unable to obtain OCAM/pass grades of the final
examination for any particular course, will have to re-register for that
course in the academic year 2022/2023 and will then be considered as
repeat students for that course. Such repeat students are required to pay
the normal tuition fee again and the highest grade such a student can
obtain for the final examination is C. Please note that students who drop
courses after the drop date will also be considered as repeat students.

Re-sit Candidates
Students who have OCAM but fail at the final examination will be
considered as re-sit candidates. They need not register and obtain
OCAM for the particular course again in the next academic year but have
to take studentship only in the academic year 2021/2022. They will be
allowed to sit for the final examination again for one subsequent year,
that is, only in the next academic year (2021/2022) and the highest grade
such a student can obtain for the final examination is C. Re-sit
23
candidates are not required to pay any course fee but only the re-sit
examination fee.
