Guidelines in Uploading file for Turnitin

To submit a paper using file upload, please do the following:

1. Log into your account.
2. Click on the title of the class you wish to submit to.
3. Click on the blue “Submit” button for the assignment you wish to submit to. If there is a
grey “Submit”, it means that submissions are not allowed for this assignment. Please
check start and due dates and the assignment info icon.
4. From the “Submit” heading, at the top of the page, select the “Single File Upload” option.
If “Cut and Paste” is shown, click on the arrow to select “Single File Upload”.
5. Enter the title of your paper in the “Submission Title” field.
6. Select the upload option.
 "Choose from this computer" - Browse to a file saved on the computer.
Select the file and then click "Open."
 "Choose from dropbox" - Browse to a file saved to your Dropbox.com
account and then click "Choose."
 "Choose from Google Drive™" - Browse to a Document file from your
Google Drive account and then click "Select." (You may need to click "Accept"
before connecting).
7. Click the "Upload" button at the bottom.
8. STOP, and WAIT for the next page to appear.
9. Click "Confirm" to confirm your submission.
Important: after your paper is successfully submitted, your digital receipt will be displayed on
screen. The digital receipt has a Submission ID number, which is confirmation that Turnitin has
received your paper.  If you do not see a digital receipt with a Submission ID number, then your
paper was not successfully received by Turnitin. The digital receipt is also emailed to you as
well.
Viewing Similarity Report
Similarity Reports provide a summary of the matching text found in a submitted paper.
The percentage indicates the overall similarity index of the paper, based on how much matching
text was found. The highlighted text in your document is colour coded and numbered to match
the sources on the right.
To view Originality Report, click on the View button to load the Turnitin Feedback
Studio. Turnitin will load the processed document as well as the Originality Report. See sample
report below in document view.
However, please note that Similarity Reports for resubmitted assignments take 24-
hours to regenerate. During this time, you will not have access to the Similarity Report or the
similarity index (percentage). If your instructor has not allowed students to view the Similarity
Report, you will need to contact your instructor regarding this matter.
Excluding references and quotation from Turnitin Reports
You can choose to exclude quotations and/or references from the similarity index and originality
report generated by Turnitin. This can potentially reduce the “noise” and give a more
representative similarity index. To do this click on the Filters and Settings icon as shown below:

1. Check the boxes for the items you wish to exclude

2. Click on the Apply changes button
If the Exclude quoted material option is set to “Yes” Turnitin will ignore text which: a) Is
enclosed between double quotation marks or b) Is indented

In denoting quoted material, student must observed proper guidelines in using quoted material
and referencing them appropriately.

If the Exclude bibliography option is set to “Yes”, any content appearing in the work after one
of the following keywords/phrases will be excluded from the similarity index:

o references
o references cited
o references and notes
o resources
o bibliography
o works cited

Exclude small sources (measured by word number of percentage)

o You can exclude sources in the source list that are below the threshold set by you. For
example, if the threshold is set at 3%, any 1% or 2% match would be removed from the
current report mode's source list (Match Overview or All Sources).

Quick Notes

1. The distribution of text matches is more important than the overall similarity index value.
2. Look for blocks of matching text - where most of a sentence or paragraph is matching
(even if a few words don’t match).
3. Small matches such as in-text citations or short technical terms are usually acceptable.
4. Generally you can ignore highlighted text from the following sections:

 The reference list or bibliography of your assignment.

 Quotations and block quotations that are properly cited and discussed within the text.
 Assignment titles and tables of contents.

5. Quoting correctly: If the highlighted text is a direct quote from the original source,
enclose it with quotation marks and include a correctly formatted reference.
6. Paraphrasing correctly: Paraphrasing appropriately means presenting ideas in your own
words and your own sentence structure, while still including an appropriate reference
