general briefing. It include a description about how to take pictures under water. Then,

diameter above a large basal buttress. It is a generally open-crowned tree, with gray to
brownish-red fissured bank.
Mahogany is perhaps the most valuable timber tree in the whole of Latin America and

rare, and is already extinct in parts of its original range. It is listed as threatened in
“Arboles Maderables en Peligro de Extincionen Costa Rica” and is listed in CITES
Appendix III.
Mahogany varies from yellowish, reddish, pinkish, or salmon colored when freshly cut,
to a deep rich red, to reddish brown as the wood matures withage. Mahogany is fine to
medium texture, with uniform to interlocking grain, ranging from straight to wavy or
curly. Irregularities in the grain often produce highly attractive figures such as fiddle
back or mottle. Mahogany polishes to a high luster, with excellent working and finishing
characteristics. It responds well to hand and machine tools, has good nailing and
screwing properties, and turns and carves superbly.
Mahogany is regarded by many as the world’s premier wood for fine cabinetry, high-

destination. Many travel agents place Raja Ampat as one of their top ten diving destination
while it ranks number one in underwater biodiversity. The International Marine
Conservation surveys suggest that the marine life diversity in the Raja Ampat area be the
highest recorded on Earth. It is greater than any other sea sampled in the Coral Triangle
composed of Indonesia, Malaysia, Philippines, Papua New Guinea, Solomon Island and

38 Raja Ampat Island
Raja Ampat Island is located in the northwest tip of Bird s Head Peninsula of West
Papua. It is an archipelago comprising over 1.500 small cays and shoals surraounding the
four main islands of Misool, Salawati, Batanta and Waigeo and the smallest island of
Kofiau.
Raja Ampat is the most bio-diverse location in the world. More than 3000 species of
fish and over 300 species of corals have been identified here. In a single one and half
hours dive we can see more than 400 species of fish. Until today, the area is virtually
unexplored and unknown due to its size. From mid-June to the end of August, Raja Ampat
area has its roughest seas and lowest visibility. During the rest of the year, the sea is
mostly very smooth with good visibility.

39 Firefly or Lightning Bug
Photinus Pyralis
The Pyralis firefly (also known as the lightning bug) is a common firefly in North
America. This partly nocturnal, luminescent beetle is the most common firefly in the
USA.
At night, the very end (the last abdominal segment) of the firefly glows a bright yellow-
green color. The firefly can control this glowing effect. The brightness of a single firefly
is 1/40 of a candle. Fireflies use their glow to attract other firelies. Males flash about
every five seconds females flash about every two seconds. This firefly is harvested by
the biochemical industry for the organic compounds luciferin (which is the chemical the
firefly uses for its bioluminescence).
This flying insect is about 0.75 inch (2 cm) long. It is mostly black, with two red spots
on the head cover, the wing covers and head covers are lined in yellow. Like all insects,
it has a hard exoskeleton, six jointed legs, two antennae, compound eyes and a body
divided into three parts (the head, thorax and abdomen).
Both the adults and the larvae are carnivores. They eat other insects (including other
fireflies), insect larvae and snails.

How do fireflies attract other fireflies?

A By controlling their glowing effect
B By camouflaging in surroundings
C By harvesting its bioluminescence
D By eating insects including other fireflies
