Below is an outline of topics with sample questions for the 4th MP Quarterly.

This should be used as a

guide and not as your only source of study material - please reference your notes and assignments for
studying. You need to be proficient in unit conversions for all problems. As always, all units must be in
MKS unless otherwise stated.

1) Define: mechanical wave, transverse wave, longitudinal wave, surface wave, electromagnetic wave.
2) Describe sound waves. What determines the pitch of sound?
3) Define the principle of superposition.
4) What is the energy of a wave related to?
5) What characteristic of a wave depends on the medium?
6) What do waves transfer?
7) How is amplitude related to the energy of a wave?
8) Understand what happens to a reflected wave when it passes from a more dense medium to a less dense medium and
when it passes from a less dense medium to a more dense medium.
9) A sound wave has a frequency of 192 Hz and travels the length of a football field, 91.4 m, in 0.271 s.
