Indian Boy

Scene 1

[Location: The garden ]

[Hermia is sitting on the bench while reading her book.]

[Lysander enter]

Lysander: What a lovely day! It makes me want to dance throughout this amazing day!

Hermia : (stunned by Lysander) Yes, it is indeed a lovely day to be out. My name is Hermia and
you?

Lysander: Greetings, my lady. (bows politely) It will be rude if I haven’t introduced myself, the
name is Lysander, the lover of happiness and joy.Would you care to join me for a dance, my
lady? ( offers his hand to Hermia).
Hermia: Well, I suppose one dance wouldn’t hurt ( shrugs and puts her book gently on the
bench)

[ Hermia accepted Lysander’s hand and they danced happily in the garden.]

Lysander: I have never seen such a wonderful and talented dancer like you, Hermia.

Hermia: Oh, thank you. Same goes for you, Lysander.

Lysander: I must tell you that it’s been a while since I danced like that. Dancing with you made
me feel like I have found another part of me in you. To put it in other words, I fell- I fell in love
with your charm.

Hermia: Oh well. (Shyly look away) I love you too.

Lysander: I guess this is what they called love at first sight.

Hermia : (seem shocked as she looked that the skies were getting darker) Lysander, thank you
for the lovely evening. I think that I should get going now or else my father wouldn’t be pleased.
(took her book and smiled at Lysander)

Lysander : (gave Hermia a weak smile) Okay, I guess I’ll see you soon, lovely.

Hermia : (laughing shyly while waving at Lysander) You will.

[Hermia leaves]

Scene 2

[Location: Egeus’ Mansion]

Hermia: Father, I’m home.

Egeus: There you are, Hermia. Where have you been?

Hermia : (smiling) I have been around having some unforgettable moment with… (quickly cover
her mouth)

Egeus: With who, my dear if I may ask?

Hermia : (raised up her voice) I mean the nature, father!

Egeus: That’s a relief to hear. (sigh) because I don't want you to mingle with men especially
now that you're engaged.

Hermia: I’m sorry, father.(shocked) Engaged? Or did I hear it wrong? Have my ears betrayed
myself?

Egeus: Calm down, my precious gem.

Hermia: Alright, father. But, is it true? Is it true that I got engaged?

Egeus: Yes, my precious daughter. You are now engaged to Demetrius, a childhood friend of
yours.

Hermia: Demetrius!?

Egeus: yes, I know that he loves you deeply and he would be a responsible husband to you.

Hermia: But father, I don’t want to marry Demetrius. He’s more of a brother of mine and I don’t
love him. How am I supposed to marry him? I don’t want to marry him, father. (rebelling)

Egeus: No, Hermia! Whether you like it or not, you must marry Demetrius. Besides he comes
from the noble. The Duke will be pleased to bless your marriage, Hermia.

Hermia: But father…

Egeus: You shall say no more about your marriage because I have arranged everything for you.
Now I want you to go to your bed and get enough rest because tomorrow we are going to the
castle to seek for the Duke’s blessing.

[Hermia runs to her bedroom with disappointment]

Scene 3

[Location: Castle ]

Theseus: I’m surprised that Egeus is now ready to marry off his one and only precious gem,
Hermia.

[Both Demetrius and Hermia kneeled as Egeus watched from a distance, smiling]

Theseus: With the power in me, I would gladly bless your marriage, Hermia and Demetrius.
Your marriage can be held after my marriage with Hippolyta, the Queen of Amazon.

[Demetrius thanked the Duke but Hermia kept silent. As Egeus was about to bless their
marriage Lysander entered into the castle hastly]

Lysander: No, my lord. (Shouted)

Theseus: Who are you, young man, if I may ask?

Lysander: My lord, my name is Lysander, Hermia’s lover. You shall not bless this marriage
because I love Hermia and I will be the one who shall marry her.

Egeus: Hermia’s lover!? Who are you to say that to us?

Lysander: I am no one, an ordinary man who is deeply in love with your daughter, my lord and I
believe that Hermia feels the same way I do.
Hermia: Yes, my lord. Lysander is my true love.

Egeus: Hermia!

[ Hermia just kept silent.]

Demetrius: I shall be the one to marry Hermia, daughter of Egeus, not you not anyone else. It

will be me, the son of the noble, Demetrius. I love Hermia and we have been friends for ages.
Besides, I could give her all the wealth in the world. You will be happier with me.

[ Demetrius and Lysander started to argue with each other.]

Theseus: Guards, stop them!

[ The Guards separated both of them.]

Theseus: Demetrius and Lysander, I want both of you to leave and settle this outside!

[The Guards bring Demetrius and Lysander outside the castle.]

Egeus: Forgive me for everything that just happened.

Theseus: Egues, don’t worry because everything will be okay. Take your leave, Egeus. I just
need to have a talk with Hermia.

Egeus: I understand, my lord.

[Egeus leaves.]

Theseus: Hermia, my dear, look at me. I know you since you were born and I’m certain that your
father would never make a decision that would harm your future. Now, tell me about how you
feel about this marriage.

Hermia: My lord, I don’t like my father’s decision. My father would never listen to me so there is
nothing that I can do when he made up his mind.

Theseus: Why wouldn’t you marry Demetrius? He is a fine gentleman and he also came from a
noble family like yours.

Hermia: Every woman would chase after Demetrius but not me, my lord. He is my best friend
and I even learned that Helena, my best friend, loves Demetrius. She deserves Demetrius and
Demetrius deserves someone who loved him back. My heart is with Lysander, I could give
Demetrius anything.

Theseus: Your father is like a god to you, you should be following what he wants or you shall be
a disgrace. Young love is always interesting but as a noble, Hermia you should know by now

that our kingdom does not allow the marriage of the noble and the ordinary. You
know the consequences if you break the law.

Hermia : I do, my lord. (lets out a sigh)

Theseus : Now, I shall leave it to you to decide. (going towards his throne and sits there)

[Hermia walks out the castle]

Scene 4

[Location: outside the castle]

Demetrius: This is because of you! If I could not have Hermia as my faithful lover, then you shall
get the same faith too.

[ Demetrius grabbed Lysander’s collar and held out his fist.]

Lysander: What a nonsense had my ears heard. Falling in love is not a crime, Demetrius, but
being the destructor of love is!

Demetrius: The destructor of love you said. You are just a mere pauper! Know your place as
one! You could dream to love a noble but not having the guts to marry a noble maiden like
Hermia. Hermia is mine and not yours!

Lysander: No wealth nor royal blood could stop my love for Hermia. I shall make her my wife.

[ Demetrius pushed Lysander away.]

Demetrius: What can a mere pauper give to Hermia? ( Demetrius smirked)

[Demetrius started to sing. They started their song battle in fighting over Hermia. The illusion of
them fighting over Hermia’s love displayed as they sing in anger. Until Egeus entered]

Egeus: Stop! (Shouted) Both of you! Demetrius, do not waste your time on this man. He is just
dreaming unicorn.

Demetrius: Unicorn, it is. (laughed) He shall marry a donkey rather than a unicorn like Hermia.

(Demetrius pushes Lysander and Lysander fall on the ground)

Lysander: Fine... (standing up while brushing the dust off his shirt) I will never stop fighting for
my love, not till death stop me. I swear that I shall own my love. (walks away)

Demetrius: I would like to see you try! (shouting towards Lysander) Send me the invitation if you
end up getting a donkey as your wife.
Egeus : (looking at the castle’s door) Well, Demetrius it seems like the Duke is having a long
talk with your future wife. I guess I better get going rather than staying here. (walking away
while nagging) I have a lot of things to do with such nuisance and with only a little
time. Young people are always troubling the adults.

[Egeus leave]

[Helena entered. Helena ran to Demetrius.]

Helena: Oh, Demetrius! My love, what has happened to you? (dusting Demetrius’ clothes)

Demetrius: It has nothing to do with you, Helena. Don’t disturb me.

[Helena tries to hug Demetrius but being pushed away by Demetrius}

Helena: You are not going to get married right?

Demetrius: You bet I am. (smiling proudly while crossing his arms)

Helena: But with who if it’s not me?

Demetrius : (proudly declaring) I am going to marry Hermia, my one and only true love. (walks
away)

[Helena fall to the ground]

Helena : (crying) How could they? Hermia has betrayed me! My own best friend has betrayed
me!

Scene 5

[Location: The woods]

Oberon: Puck!

Puck: Yes, Your Highness. (stands on one knee)

Oberon: I heard that Queen Titania has the Indian Boy! I want that Indian Boy, what hers should
be mine! Deliver my message to Titania. Tell her to meet me right now.

Puck: Right away, Your Highness.

[Puck leave. After a while, Titania came in with the Indian boy once she received the message.]

Titania: What a surprise that you called me here, King Oberon.

Oberon: Why would you be surprised? It’s my kingdom anyway, I am the King of the Fairies.

Titania: Of course, Your Highness but you shall not forget that I own more than you, I am the
Queen anyway.

Oberon: Oh! I knew that you used your charm to get everything that you want including this

boy, the Indian boy that I wanted to make as one of mine.

Titania: And you shall never have him! Ever! Because you don’t know what love is. Then, why

would you be taking care of others when you don’t love them?

Oberon: I might not know what love is but as the King of Fairies, I could create love!

Titania: You know nothing about love, King Oberon! Well, I guess I will be going now. I shall see
you soon, Oberon, the King of Fairies.
(walks away)

Oberon: Puck! Did you hear that?!

Puck: Y…yes, Your Highness.

Oberon: We need to think of something to make her beg at my feet. As if she ever loves
someone!!

Puck: Your Highness, I have never seen Queen Titania fall in love with anyone, (whispering)
not even you.

Oberon: Hmm… I do notice that. What are you suggesting then?

Puck: Well, Your Highness I suggest what if we give her the first ever experience of falling in
love with a guy, literally any guy.

Oberon: What an idea! I like it! (thinking and the shouted) I’m brilliant! Such a brilliant king!

Puck: Brilliant, Your Highness. I don’t think it suits you well. (laughed)

Oberon: What?

Puck: Nothing, Your Highness. You’re brilliant!

Oberon: That’s right, my loyal Puck! I have a plan! Now, you know what to do. Go and collect
some herbs for me. (smiling evilly)

Scene 6
[Location: Egeus’ house]

Hermia: Father would never listen to me. Not even the Duke!

[Hermia was crying in the garden. Lysander whispered softly as he saw her cried behind the
bushes.]

Lysander: Don’t cry, I’m here.

Hermia: Who’s that?

Lysander: It’s me, my unicorn. (came out of the bushes)

Hermia: Unicorn!?

Lysander: I mean, my love. Come with me, Hermia. Let’s leave this place and go on a wonderful
love journey with me! (offers his hand to Hermia) We shall go to the place where no one could
stop us.

[Hermia accepted his hand and they ran away into the woods.]

Scene 7

[Location: The Woods]

Lysander: Finally, Hermia, it’s just the two of us. Thank you for risking your life to be with me.

Hermia: Love, I would do anything for it!

(suddenly they hear footsteps)

Lysander: I think we should get going before the nightfall. (they run further into the
woods)

[ Hermia and Lysander leave. Demetrius and Helena enter]

Demetrius: Helena! I hate it if you are being too clingy like this. Get away from me! You are just
distracting me!

Helena: But Demetrius, don’t you see my love for you? Can’t you feel it? I loved you with all my
heart.

Demetrius: No, I don’t and I will never love you back Helena!

[ Behind the bushes, King Oberon was witnessing Helena and Demetrius.]

Oberon: What a scene! Why would a man resist such a lovely

lady? Poor girl.

Demetrius: Helena, I am sorry for doing this but I just can’t find my Hermia if you keep on
distracting me. (Demetrius hits Helena at the back of her head)

[Helena lay unconsciously on the ground]

[Puck arrives with the herbs]

Puck: Here, Your Highness. The herbs that you asked for.

Oberon: Excellent, my loyal Puck. Now let’s mix them up. (chanting a few words) My love potion
is ready! Puck, I would like to help this lady
to gain her love.

Puck: Yes, Your Highness.

Oberon: Go and find a fine gentleman wearing fancy outfit and pour a
drop of this potion in his eyes and he shall fall in love with the first person that he saw,
particularly, this girl. 9casts a spell on Helena to wake her up)

Puck: With honour, Your Highness.

Helena: What am I doing, lying down here? Where’s Demetrius? (quickly calls for Demetrius)

Scene 8

[Location: in the woods]

Lysander: I suggest that we get some rest now and we will continue our love journey tomorrow.

Hermia: Sure, my love. Have some rest. (Lysander sleeps on Hermia’s lap)

[Puck enters]

Puck: Oh see. There is a couple sleeping under a tree. That guy looks like the one that King
Oberon described. (approaching the couples) Well, I guess it's him as he looks like the
one but who is this lady? Perhaps she's his friend. Well, well, now I shall fulfil my duty.
(puts a drop of the love potion in Lysander's eye) To spread the love! Hooray!

[Puck dances away]

Scene 9

[Location: under the tree where Hermia and Lysander slept]

Helena: I need to find my Demetrius! Where in the world is he?!

Lysander : (woke up due to the noise that Helena made and he straightaway fall in love with

her) Good morning, love.

Helena: Who are you?

Lysander: My name is Lysander, love.

Helena: And why are you calling me, love?

(at the same time)

Hermia: Lysander, my love. Good morning. (she saw Helena)

Helena & Hermia: Hermia! Helena!

Hermia: What are you doing here?

Helena: I should be the one to ask you that. Well, that is not important. Hermia, why did you
betray me?! I am your friend.

Hermia: Wait, what? Betray you? I would never do so.

Helena: Huh? Would you swear on that?

Hermia: What are you talking about?

Helena: Demetrius. You know that I loved him, right? But you, you're getting married to him!
Isn’t that a betrayal?

Lysander: Love, did you just say that you love someone else? Who is he? Take me to him! I am

going to kill him!

Hermia: Lysander, I did not say that.

Lysander: I am not talking to you! I am talking about my love, Helena.

Hermia: What did I hear just now? Helena? Your love? What?! It’s not funny, Lysander.

Lysander: I am not making a joke. I am serious.

Hermia: Okay, fine! I am getting out from here! Don’t you dare follow me!

(Hermia walks away and both Lysander and Helena followed her)

(somewhere nearby)

Oberon: Puck! What have you done?

Puck: I did what you told me to.

Oberon: You have cast the spell on the wrong person. Now, go and find the other guy, the
right guy and make sure not to make any mistake.

Scene 10

(in the woods)

(Demetrius is sleeping under a tree)

(Puck came in singing and he saw Demetrius)

Puck: This is great! I have found him! (dropping the love potion onto Demetrius’s eye) Just a
drop is enough. Now I shall tell the king.

(dances away)

Helena: Lysander, get away from me! You are so annoying!

Lysander: How could you say that. I love you and all I want is to be with you.

(Helena accidentally wake Demetrius up by stepping on his leg)

Demetrius: Ouch! It hurts! (he saw Helena and fall in love with her) Hi there.

Helena: Demetrius, my love. Finally, I am glad to see you again! I thought I have lost you.

Lysander: Is he the one that you love, my love?

Demetrius: She is mine and I love her. Who are you?

(they grabbed each other’s neck)

(at the same time)

(Hermia rushed in)

Hermia: What is this all about, Helena? Why are they fighting and why did Lysander say that
Does he love you?

Helena: Is it not one of your doings, Hermia? Stop acting like you don’t know anything.

Hermia: Obviously I don’t have a clue on what’s going on right now! Lysander! Tell me that this
is all a joke or even better tell me that this is just some stupid dream!

(Puck and Oberon came in)

Oberon: What is this chaos? Puck, remove the spell that you have wrongly cast on.

Puck: Then I shall make the two guy fall asleep first. (he approach Lysander and Demetrius
and cast a sleeping spell on them) (he removes the love spell from Lysander’s eye)

Hermia & Helena: Demetrius! Lysander!

Hermia: Lysander, wake up, love. It’s me, Hermia. Your one and only love.

Helena: Demetrius, it’s me, Helena. The one who truly loves you.

Demetrius: Oh, my head. Helena, my love.

Helena: Demetrius!

Lysander: Hermia, Hermia, where are you.

Hermia: I am here, my love.

Lysander: What happened to me? My head hurts so much. I feel like I have been dreaming a
very weird dream. (sees Demetrius and Helena) What are they doing here?

(somewhere nearby)

Oberon: Good job, Puck. Now let’s wait for Titania to hand over the boy.

Scene 12

(in the woods)

Titania: Oberon! I heard about what you have done on the lovers. What were you thinking?

Oberon: Are you not under a spell? (looking at Puck)

Titania: I was. Until this man wakes me up. (pointing at Nick Bottom) How dare you disgrace
me!

Oberon: I did that on purpose.

Titania: And what exactly is that purpose of yours?

Oberon: I just wanted your attention. Uhh… I mean the Indian boy. I want the Indian boy to be
mine.

Titania: Is that all these ruckuses about? (Oberon nods) Why didn't you say that you were lonely

all this time? Things would be easier if you’re being honest with me. I could understand
but by doing all of this? Why? Why can't you be honest with me? I love you, King Oberon. I pity
you and all this while I have been waiting for you to be honest with me.

Oberon: I am truly sorry, Queen Titania. I loved you since we first met and I just can’t find a way
to express what I feel.

Titania: Oh, Silly King Oberon. Don’t be sad, we could go through everything together. From
today on, we shall have each other’s back.

Scene 13

(in the woods on Theseus’s wedding day)

Theseus: Today is a joyful day for both my wife and I. We shall have an adventure in this wood  
today and be back when the sunset.

Hippolyta: Thank you, my lord, and to God, we pray for our relationship to last until eternity.

(from a distance)
Theseus: Maybe this is what He wants. For love and fun to be appreciated by everyone.

Hippolyta: Maybe it is, my love. We should let the people in the kingdom celebrate it as well.

Theseus: I know there was a reason we are together. You complete me and guide me,
Hippolyta.

(Hippolyta smiles shyly).

Hermia: I hear a crowd coming from that direction.

Helena: That means we are no further from home.

Hermia: Finally, we found our way back.

(Egeus saw his daughter)

Egeus: My Lord, it’s them. I saw my daughter, Hermia. (running towards Hermia and hugs her)  
Thank god you’re safe.

Theseus: How come the four of you are here, in the woods?

Lysander: I don’t even remember how we ended being in these woods. It almost feels like a
dream.

Demetrius: Yes it does feel like a dream. A weird dream on a sunny midsummer day.

Egeus: Hermia, my dear. Don’t ever do this again. Don't run away from me, dear. I regretted
my decision and I wanted to apologize.
Theseus: Hermia, your father and I have decided to allow you to marry the man of your love if
that is what brings you happiness. From today onwards, as a gift form me on my wedding day, I
would like to set a new law to bless any relationship as long as they  love each other.
Hermia: Are my ears functioning? Or have they betrayed me? Or have the midsummer heat hit
my brain? Are you okay, father?

(Hermia starts to panic. Lysander moves closer to Hermia to keep her from falling).

Egeus: My daughter, I know I haven’t been the best father to you. Maybe it is time for me to be.
And Lysander, I want you to know that you have my blessing. But I will not hesitate to punch
you if you hurt my daughter.

Demetrius: (laughs) Oh, Egeus. Don't ever change. (smiles and looks at Helena). My love,
seeing their happiness has inspired me. Will you-

Helena: YES! YES DEMETRIUS!!

(everyone freezes in time)

Oberon: Chris help with the endinggggggggggggggggggggggg
