Devine Spirit:
Devine House 2018-2019
What is the Devine Spirit? Quite simply, Devine Spirit is about a team of brothers, working together and
guided by the principles of trust, support and mutual respect. We may have our sibling squabbles but like
brothers we live, work and play together for each other. We may not have all of the best sportsmen, or all of
the best musicians, but when it comes to competing or performing we all contribute, and if we are unable to
compete, we support our fellow Devinites! Whatever the challenge we will always try our best to beat the
man in front and we will always try to have fun on the way. The more we try, the more we get out of the fun
challenges of Clayesmore life.

Over the last fifteen years, amongst our many victories we can claim six house singing competitions, six
sports days, a number of cross countries and quite a few swimming galas. We know that we cannot win
everything, but we try our best and we compete. We offer the school actors, scholars, readers, doers and
triers and a string of head boys. We work to take advantage of the opportunities Clayesmore offers us.

Nearly twenty ago Devine became a band of wanderers, giving up our day-room outside the Medical Centre
to the drummers in the music school. We found temporary refuge in the old physics lab until we were able to
find a more permanent base in the underground tunnels of the Main House. We have now anneed the Sixth
Form Common and have a wonderful open space with a table tennis table, lots of sofas, two screens, music
speakers and an office for both the matrons: Ms Hughes and Mrs Meadows. Perhaps more importantly we
have a kitchen area (bar!) for lashings of toast, biscuits and drinks. Devine boarders become, in all reality,
day pupils – and this is one of the key factors in the close and healthy relationships between Devinites.

Yet at the end of the school day many day boys take advantage of the Devine escape, and join their boarding
friends back in the House where they can enjoy the warm smile of Ms Hughes and more rounds of freshly
buttered toast – and then the football in the garden begins, or a good old-fashioned game of kick-the-can.
The rooms are always immaculate and a delight to return to, for Devine is fortunate to have such supportive
‘counsellors’ as Muriel and Mandy. The boys do have to do their bit, and are expected to make their own
beds and keep their own rooms tidy, and the Ladies will add the finishing touches. It’s not home but it is
pretty close to the real thing.

With another stroll back through the village for school tea, Devinites return to their academic priorities
(prep) followed by an assault on the kitchen where great culinary delights such as noodles or frozen pizzas
are prepared! Steaks and bacon from the village shop are the quality snacks. The occasional Sunday Roast
with guests from other houses is another treat. Sunday brunches with oodles of bacon, eggs and are an
essential part of our Sundays. And the boys eventually clean up their own mess – and a mess it will be!
Order out of idle chaos!

The location of the boarding house has allowed Devine to develop an independent identity away from the
business of the main school, and it is this identity that has allowed Devinites to join together as one and to
flourish as leaders within one team.

DEVINE HOUSE
RULES
Devine House 2018-2019

Ethos: Devine runs on reason, respect and trust.

Devine boys are encouraged to become responsible for their own actions within a close
community: to aim to satisfy their full potential, and to develop an awareness and respect for
those around them. They are encouraged to become responsible for their own learning whilst
appreciating the advantage of developing a breadth of interests and hobbies.

Duty tutors (both visiting and resident tutors) are expected to enjoy their evenings in Devine
as much as possible. They should get to know the boys, encouraging and supporting them,
listening to their problems / concerns and offering sympathy and appropriate advice,
following up on any concerns / problems; enjoying the company of individuals and groups.

At the same time a relaxed but constructive and orderly attitude to prep is to be encouraged.

Sixth formers are employed to put the juniors to bed and to carry out specific routine chores
(cleaning up the kitchen and TV room after use).

Six formers have no authority or permission to punish any pupil. They are big brothers
learning to gain cooperation through respect. They can report difficult, rude or uncooperative
individuals or groups to the head of house, the duty tutor, the house matron or the
housemaster.

Tutors are expected to record ALL incidents, problems, phone calls and concerns in the
house diary for the housemaster and / or matron to be able to decide on an appropriate course
of action. The housemaster is usually in and can be summoned at any time. He will have
informed the duty staff if he has to be away for the house for all or part of the evening.

Any notices for line will be written down by the matron and left on the office desk. These
sheets of paper are kept for possible future reference.

Prep code: Pupils are expected to develop an individual responsibility for their prep. Prep
should be conducted in a relaxed but constructive and orderly manner. Music may be listened
to on headphones but no sound should be able to be heard by others (NB headphones should
not be worn at night). Prep must be completed at a table /desk whilst sitting on a work chair.
Once a pupil has completed his prep he may retire to a comfortable chair in order to read a
book (novel, short story etc) or an approved (educational) magazine, e.g. National
Geographic, the Geographical, RSPB magazine, Hindsight History etc.

Pupils are expected to ask for permission and to sign out and in if they wish to leave the
house grounds at any time other than an ‘out night’. The rules for ‘out nights’ are as
described in the school rules.

Although Devine cannot be a home in the real sense of the word, the aim is to make the
running of Devine as homely and home-like as possible:
