1.0 Title
Potentiometric Titration of an Acid Mixture

2.0 Objectives
1. To determine the quantitative composition of a solution, which is a mixture of monoprotic
strong acid and a triprotic weak acid by potentiometric methods.
2. To construct a potentiometric titration and construct a titration curve.

3.0 Calculations
Part A: Standardization of Approximately 0.05 M Sodium Hydroxide

Considering the equation of the reaction:

NaOH (aq) + KHC8H4O4 (aq) → KNaC8H4O4 (aq) + H2O (ℓ)

From this equation, 1 mole of NaOH reacts with 1 mole of KHC8H4O4.

n NaOH =n KHP
M NaOH V NaOH m
= KHP
1000 MM KHP
m KHP (1000)
M NaOH =
MM KHP (V NaOH )

m KHP (1000)
Using the formula: M NaOH = ,
MM KHP (V NaOH )
Let: M NaOH =¿ Molarity of sodium hydroxide solution
m KHP =¿ Mass of KHP used in each titration
MM KHP=¿ Molar mass of KHP
V NaOH =¿ Volume of sodium hydroxide solution used in each titration
Titratio

Average molarity of sodium hydroxide solution, M NaOH =
3
= 0.04225 M

∴ The average molarity of sodium hydroxide solution is 0.04225 M.
