First of all, let us say thanks to god who give us chance to finish this CRITICAL
BOOK REVIEW on time. I would like to say thanks to Maa’m Farida Hanim Saragih, S.Pd,
M.Hum and Maa’m Khairunnisa Batubara, S.Pd, M.Hum as the lecturer who give me time
and trust to finish this assignment.
In writing this Critical Book Review, I feel that there are many shortcomings in
technical and material writing, given our capabilities. For this reason, I sincerely look

CHAPTER I

INTRODUCTION

A. Introduction
Four common and basic English language skills are Speaking, Reading, Listening
and Writing. This skills are connected one each other on learning English. These skills are
necessary for intensive communication in any environment, especially on the education
development and work place. The sentences structure such as phrase, clause, tenses,
grammar, and vocabularies are needed to masters these four skills language.
Speaking is the basic communications skills on English communication and
language. It is important to master this one basic skills to improve our communication and
interactions in English, the speakers must empower their speaking skill in order to speak
fluently and easily to understand by people. The purpose of learning this skills are to let the
speakers or learners be able to use the language properly, pronounce them, and apply them on
the right place.
Speaking has many styles on it’s delivery. Describing style seems to imply in most
cases a comparison with other styles. This styles include the accent. There are two common
accent used on speech, they are American accent and British accent. The most noticeable
difference of American and British accent is the vocabulary. There are hundreds of everyday
words that are different. As one example, British call the of a car the “bonnet” while
Americans call it the hoods. The Americans go on vacation while the British go on holidays.
The first book is “Let’s Speak English”. This book contains and explains the step
of how to provide a comprehensive course for begineers especially on oral (Speaking). This
book has the Basic Aims :
1. To introduce the student gradually to the World ideas and to make them familiar with
a wide range of different styles of speaking
2. To continue the student’s training in speaking skills.
3. To make the student especially the beginners understand the basic of speaking
This book is also have a guide on how to use the course. This book has some exercises to
improve the reader’s skill on basic speaking.

The second book, “Fluency in English” is a basic book on Oral (Speaking) skills that
contains the basic lesson on speaking. The book is written to guide the beginners be able to
speak basic English with proper way.

DESCRIPTION OF THE BOOK

A. Summary of The Book

 Book I

 Chapter 1 : Teaching Your Tongue To Speak English


If you want to speak English quickly, first you must understand how your brain
produce speech. This has interpretation with an analogy “How Machine Work” because it is
very related on how our brain work so that we can speak with the language. A machine
control is a control where the input in form of data to the system which only use available
informations but resulted a reaction. This system able to make the devices working on it’s
own automatically from the received data from the device then kept and forwarded as an
order.
The conclusion is the control of speech through the brain by the respond from what
you hear and mouth position which kept in the memory of your brain. If you want to be fluent
on English language, it is important to receive your tongue activity as the exercises to
memorize. To make it work effectively, however you must train your memory, tongue, and
hearing at the same time because they worked at the same time when you speaking English.
When you speak on your on language, your brain saves all the words you said. Your
brain is also control your tongue, mouth, and your respiration system. Your hearing is also
being an important thing because our ears hear what our mouth say and being a sound source
to the brain. The information received by brain and ears will result a respond which then be
an evaluation of the tongue and mouth activity and words meaning.

 Chapter 2 : Four Rules For Learning Spoken English


There are four simple rules we must follow while learning to speak in English with
these method :
1. To be able to speak english correctly, You must say it loudly
It is very important, speak loudly when you want to learn. You practice your brain
to respond a new concept with stimulation of tongue and mouth activity. This

things only can achieved if you speak loudly. The reason why Englsih lesson is
still very hard to understand is the study method which is silent. So, speak loudly
can improve your English skills.
2. To learn English fluently, you should think on English language
Not all of the support sense trained when you speak English. There are a cognitive
lesson (memory) which is important on supporting the lesson progress. To speak,
your brain must involved effectively on forming the sentences introduction.
Therefore, all words and sentences are not translated.

3. The more you speak loudly, you can speak English faster
The purpose we wanted to achive in the end is not just writing the words or
sentences correctly in English. The result we want to achieve is also not to make
you able to pronounce the sentences which the meaning is understandable. The
main purpose is to make you able to speak the words or sentences perfectly same
as the Native speakers so that people will think that you’re the native speaker too.

4. Don’t make a mistake when learning English


When you’re exercising to speak English with Spoken English method, you are
suggested to try hard everytime you speak. However, when you’re making a
mistake, you not only wasted your time on studying, but you must try twice from
the time you spare to train your brain, mouth and your hearings.

In this chapter, the writers saying his gratitude about the written of the book.

 Book II

 Part 1 : Basic
In this part of the book, the writers ask the students and readers to study about
reading, listening, writing, and speaking. In this basic part, the writers make 3 units of
exercise, each unit has each aim and purpose, it also contains the special difficult of each
unit. In this exercise, the writers make a basic exercise and the test to pass for part 2

 Part 2 : Advanced
In this part of the book, the writer is making 3 unit of advanced exercise with the
purpose to enhance the skills of fluency in English. The main purpose on all units is to
Joninng the simple statements to make complex statements and to complete the sentences
taken from the passage in any way.

B. Strengthen of The book


 Book I
This book explains alot on how to speak English especially for the beginners and
giving the examples also exercises to the readers to improve the matery that was given
to them.

 Book II
This book has many exercises from basic speaking to the advanced speaking
problems. It also describe the main purpose of each unit on each part, the aim, the key
to solve the problems and the difficulties on each unit.

C. Weaknesses of The book


 Book I
This book only has 4 short chapters as the preface to the lesson/exercises. It should be
explains more of the speaking problems to let the beginners know more about the
basic of speaking

 Book II
This book has no preface to lead us or guide us to the exercises, it has no further
definitions on how each part should be answered.

CHAPTER III

THE IMPLICATIONS

A. Student Analysis
The first book contains the definition and the philosophy from the writer for the writing
of the book. The book is also contains the step on how to speak English by four simple step
and it’s explanation. It contains some exercises to improve the reader’s skill on speaking. The
second book is full of exercises and have a purpose on each unit. It also mark the special
difficulties on all unit discussed.

B. Conclusion
The first book “Let’s Speak English” consists of 4 chapters and guide the readers
especially the beginners on how to speak fluently and correctly in English by explaining all
parts and giving example and exercises.
The Second book “Fluency in English” give the readers the exercises from basic to
advanced and give the readers what are the special difficulties on each unit.

C. Suggestion
The Writers suggest the for each book to improve more about the explanation of each
matery discussed in the book. We suggest the readers to read these books to increase the
knowledge about speaking skills and it’s exercises, and also for a reference.
