Abstract
The objectives of structural design is to design the structure for
stability, strength and serviceability. To prevent overturning, sliding
or buckling of the structure, or parts of it, under the action of loads.
To resist safely the stresses induced by the loads in the
various structural members.

Design of any structure on paper is very tedious and much time

required for design so we introduce another way of design by
excel spreadsheet design

What is spreadsheet :-

A spreadsheet is an interactive computer application for

organization, analysis and storage of data in tabular form.
Spreadsheets developed as computerized analogs of paper
accounting worksheets.[4] The program operates on data
entered in cells of a table. Each cell may contain either numeric
or text data, or the results of formulas that automatically
calculate and display a value based on the contents of other
cells. A spreadsheet may also refer to one such electronic
document

Spreadsheet users can adjust any stored value and observe the
effects on calculated values. This makes the spreadsheet useful
for "what-if" analysis since many cases can be rapidly
investigated without manual recalculation. Modern spreadsheet
software can have multiple interacting sheets, and can display
data either as text and numerals, or in graphical form.

5
Rcc design of conical shaft water tank in excel

Besides performing basic arithmetic and mathematical

functions, modern spreadsheets provide built-in functions for
common financial and statistical operations. Such calculations
as net present value or standard deviation can be applied to
tabular data with a pre-programmed function in a formula.
Spreadsheet programs also provide conditional expressions,
functions to convert between text and numbers, and functions
that operate on strings of text.

Spreadsheets have replaced paper-based systems throughout

the business world. Although they were first developed for
accounting or bookkeeping tasks, they now are used
extensively in any context where tabular lists are built, sorted,
and shared.

2 Basic Of AEIOU Canvas

Understanding the problem of society is one of the biggest
challenges for engineering student as till now they were making
project on imaginary ideas. On the first day, we got the basic
knowledge of design engineering. What is design engineering and why
we need design engineering? How this subject will be useful to the
student? All this questions has been cleared properly and also that how
this activity will be useful in design engineering.

These are the steps of the project or problem. In this canvas, you have
to find out…
• What is user to your problems?
• What is Environment of your project?
• What are activities?
• What is objects and Interaction of your problems?

These are the 1st step of the Project or Problem. List out all these things
and make an AEIOU Canvas, it is the basic action of Design
Engineering. It will help you to know about your problem or project.

Empathy Mapping

3 These are the 2nd step of the Project or Problem.

Understanding the problem of society is one of the biggest
challenges for engineering student as till now they were
making project on imaginary ideas. So this was based on
understanding the domains of the problem in broader sense which
emphasized on interacting with the people of your domain area which
included more of casual talk rather than technical session. And this
activity was named as Story Boarding Canvassing.
Our domain was Wave Power Plant, We started with
identify the people related to our domain directly and indirectly. As we
need to focus on people’s emotions we wrote Happy and Sad Story
which helps us to get more attached with user.

4 Ideation Canvas

These are the 3rd step of the project or problem. From the user canvas,
you have an idea what are the people? In ideation canvas, you have to
carry out which type of activities is related to your project and people?
What is situation and location regarding to activities? Then after you
have to find the possible solutions. It is depend or not depend to your
activities.

5
Product Development Canvas
4th step is development of product. From possible
Solutions, you have idea about what is product? Our
product is ‘Design of Ocean Wave Power Plant’.

RCC DESIGN OF CONICAL SHAFT
WATERTANK IN EXCEL
Storage reservoirs and overhead tank are used to store water, liquid
petroleum, petroleum products and similar liquids. The force analysis
of the reservoirs or tanks is about the same irrespective of the
chemical nature of the product. All tanks are designed as crack free
structures to eliminate any leakage. Water or raw petroleum
retaining slab and walls can be of reinforced concrete with adequate
cover to the reinforcement. Water and petroleum and react with
concrete and, therefore, no special treatment to the surface is
required. Industrial wastes can also be collected and processed in
concrete tanks with few exceptions. The petroleum product such as
petrol, diesel oil, etc. are likely to leak through the concrete walls,
therefore such tanks need special membranes to prevent leakage.
Reservoir is a common term applied to liquid storage structure and it
can be below or above the ground level. Reservoirs below the
ground level are normally built to store large quantities of water
whereas those of overhead type are built for direct distribution by
gravity flow and are usually of smaller capacity.

OBJECTIVE

1. To make a study about the analysis and design of water tanks.

2. To make a study about the guidelines for the design of liquid

retaining structure according to IS Code.

3. To know about the design philosophy for the safe and economical
design of water tank.

4. To develop programs for the design of water tank of flexible base

and rigid base and the underground tank to avoid the tedious
calculations.

5. In the end, the programs are validated with the results of manual
calculation given in Concrete Structure book

Problem definition
In paper rcc design take more time to complete and this process is very
tedious so this is problem and it is solved by using spreadsheet in
Microsoft excel

Depth of foundation
Concrete grade and grade of steel
Step 2
Permissible stresses: - we are finding these stresses find out by is 456-
2000 as wall as is 3370
find out permissible stress from is 456-2000 annex b
Step3 Find out dimension of tank
Total water volume =all segment volume (from this equation find out
radius of conical tank than we are find out all other remaining volume
of tank segment
Step-4 Design of top conical dome
Find out ast from meridional thrust at base and circumferential force at
base
Step-5 design of top

Rcc design of conical shaft water tank in excel

Design of ring beam by hoop tension then find out ast

Step-6:- Design of conical shell

Find out hoop tension in conical shell this tension at various hight find
out but maximum hoop tension find out at am above base .this tension
of hoop find out main and distribution steel provide
Step-7:- design of bottom dome and internal shaft
Find out meridional and circumferential stresses in dome and shaft
Check meridional stresses is less than 5 N/mm2
From circumferential stresses find out hoop stress this hoop stress give
us require steel in shaft and dome
Step-8:- design of bottom ring beam
Horizontal component find out from conical shell
Horizontal thrust from bottom dome
Net compressive force in ring beam =( Horizontal component find out
from conical shell
- Horizontal thrust from bottom dome )
Hoop compression find out per m
Find out compressive stress from beam section. this stress is less than
5 N/mm2
Provided minimum reinforcement of 0.3%
Step-9:- design of supporting cylindrical shaft
We have diameter of shaft

Shantilal Shah Engineering College Bhavnagar

14
Rcc design of conical shaft water tank in excel

Calculate all load from above shaft

Check empty and full condition of stresses those are less than
permissible stresses
Provide minimum reinforcement of 0.8% provide
Check for seismic forces and check this stresses is less than permissible

This processes of design throughout
excel spread sheet.it so easy and time
saving. it is time consume more when
first time design in excel once you
made a design in excel of rcc structure,
then after very easy to make an another
design we required only input data after
input just in one click we can get
design.
