Guwahati Calling
This time the North East beckoned Filmfare to celebrate
excellence in Hindi cinema. The 65th Amazon Filmfare
Awards 2020 @Awesome Assam were held in Sarusajai,
Guwahati at the Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium. It has
been a venue for many a prestigious sporting event. It was
for the first time that an award show of this magnitude was
being held there.
We were apprehensive about the new faraway venue.
We had to climb a logistical mountain to make sure all the
attendees reached there on time and the event went off
as planned. It was a huge hurdle alright but the patience
and persistence of the Filmfare team as well as the huge
cooperation extended by the film fraternity helped us
overcome it.
I remain grateful to Karan Johar for being there for us
always. His presence sends forth a calming signal and is
reassuring. This year too he treated the event like his own
baby. Vicky Kaushal and he were the perfect emcees. They

shared an easy-going chemistry and made sure the show,
which was to be telecast the next day, had a fine flow. They
had a large share in making it great TV content. I’m grateful
for Akshay Kumar as he had an early flight to catch but
remained at the venue till the very end, committing himself
fully to the project.
It won’t be an exaggeration to say Ramesh Sippy has been
a favourite filmmaker for a generation of cinegoers. We have
all grown up watching Sholay and most of us know the
dialogue of the iconic film by heart. Released way back in
1975, it’s a film that has never lost its magic and continues to
find new fans with each passing year. We were privileged to
honour the filmmaker with our Lifetime Achievement Award
this year. We’re grateful that he agreed to fly all the way
to Guwahati for the event. He has been someone Filmfare
counts as extended family. Thanks for all your love and
support sir.
I have always admired Govinda. He had a pulse on what
the masses wanted and his energy while dancing was
palpable indeed. It was an honour bestowing him with
a special award. Must say his smile and warmth haven’t
changed with time. This issue is dedicated to our mammoth

legacy forward when it comes to grace, Pranutan Bahl made a glittering appearance at the red carpet. In her Nadine Merabi gown, she
had us hooked to her sophisticated fashion statement. Tara Sutaria went for an all-out glam look in her single shoulder Jad Ghandour

The 65th Amazon Filmfare Awards 2020 @Awesome Assam created a huge buzz for many reasons. This year we
decided to fly the stars to the North-East. Awesome Assam was the theme of the awards, which were held at the
Indira Gandhi Athletic Stadium in Sarusajai, Guwahati. The who’s who of Bollywood descended on Guwahati and
were given a rousing welcome right from the airport itself. The love and warmth showered on the stars made their
special night more special. It’s rare to have an out-and-out musical in Hindi cinema and Gully Boy came as a breath
of fresh air. It introduced us to the world of underground rappers and sucker-punched us with its emotional core.
No wonder it took home 13 awards. It won the cream of acting honours like Best Actor In A Leading Role (Male)
- Ranveer Singh, Best Actor In A Leading Role (Female) - Alia Bhatt, Best Actor In A Supporting Role (Female)
- Amruta Subhash, Best Actor In A Supporting Role (Male) - Siddhant Chaturvedi, besides the Best Film trophy
and a host of other trophies as well. The Lifetime Achievement trophy was awarded to Ramesh Sippy, the director
of Sholay and many more commercially hit films. We loved the fact that he won such a warm reception from the

Sholay (1975) will forever be counted as
one of the top 10 Hindi films ever made.
This achievement alone has guaranteed
director Ramesh Sippy a permanent
place in the pantheon of cinema history.

Sholay wasn’t just a curry Western, as
some people hurriedly describe it. It was
a folk tale in microsome, with elements
of good and evil having a standoff, with
colourful characters moving in and out
of the narrative. It celebrated heroic
friendship, gave us a cult villain in
Gabbar Singh and an emotional story
we never tire of watching. Ramesh Sippy
also directed the ahead-of-its-times
Andaz (1971), which spoke of widow
remarriage. Also, the entertaining Seeta
Aur Geeta (1972), which turned Hema
Malini into a female superstar, thanks to
her double role in the comedy. His Shakti
(1982) brought stalwarts Dilip Kumar
and Amitabh Bachchan together on
screen for the first time and is cherished
for the acting masterclass they represent.

He’s the original gully boy. The Virar ka
chokra, as he was initially called, came
out of nowhere to reign over the hearts
of millions. Govinda learnt the ropes the

His USP was his amiable face, which

the vibrant Sattriya dance
routine. The indigenous folk
dance from the state, Bihu,
was choreographed by Ranjit
Gogoi. A riot of colours, of
culture, of emotions… this
was a spectacular segment
celebrating the state’s
