CHAPTER 2

ESSENTIALS MODALITIES OF
HOMOEOPATHIC MEDICINES
24 CHAPTER 2  MODALITIES OF HOMEOPATHIC MEDICINES

ABOUT THE CHAPTER

Modality means those conditions on which the symptoms of a drug are aggravated and
ameliorated.

It is an essential part of Homoeopathic prescribing. The busy prescriber of today selects

his medicine on the name of the malady and one or two symptoms. He has no time to ask
for the modalities. The patient too generally does not help him in this respect. He does
not observe whether his pain is relieved by heat or cold, by covering or uncovering,
by pressure or otherwise, by movement or rest etc. The result is generally a failure.

Kent has said, "Suppose the patient always avoided warm things and much clothing and
wanted the cold open air, and still had a dozen keynotes, you would find every time that
Calcarea would fail."

It is hoped that this little chapter will encourage the prescriber and through him his
patient not to overlook the modalities.
