32. (a) (i) I think the note is from Lulu telling that she has run away.
(ii) Lulu’s mother probably felt very upset when she read the note and that is
why she crumpled it.
(b) The voices were probably Lulu’s voice and the boyfriend’s whom she had
run away with.
(c) Lulu probably did not take the rag-doll with her when she left because
she no longer has the need for a rag-doll since she is most probably a teenager.

33. (a) The sequences are as follow :-

E.g.:
It is early dawn. Dawan and Kwai are up very early. (0)
Dawan and Kwai talk about the unfairness of giving sacks of rice to the tax 5
collector.
Teacher announces that Dawan has won the scholarship. 10
Teacher and the students pretend they are having a Geography lesson when a 8
student spots the headmaster is heading to the class.
Dawan and Kwai sit on the rickety old bridge above the river and talk about 1
the scholarship which entitles the holder to free education in the City.
Teacher has a long and lively discussion with the students about the landlord

taking away the sacks of rice as rent for their rice fields.
Their parents do not favour sending girls to school 4
Teacher discusses what the student who wins the scholarship should do for

their village and society.
Dawan feels that she will not get the scholarship because she is a girl. 3
Teacher begins the discussion in the class about the sacks of rice the students
have seen underneath their houses in the morning waiting to be collected by 6
the tax collector.
Kwai plans to return and teach his father how to raise new crops and use
better fertilizers if he managed to get the scholarship and further his 2
education in the City.

(b) The answers are :-


i. It is special because they are expecting to get the results of the examination and
the name of the winner of the scholarship.

probably there is only one school with one class in the whole village.

iii. She does this because she knows that the general practice in the village is that of
gender inequality that is girls stand less chance of furthering education. So,
Dawan is not likely to do better than Kwai in the examination.
