2.4.2 OFFICE WORKS

A review of existing documents and data will thus be undertaken as a first step in the studies. Some
of the documents to be assessed are:

 Relevant Documents (local geological, geotechnical and geo hazards investigation

Reports, the technical specification, other Standards, codes etc.)
 General plan and elevation drawings of the Bridge
 Topographic and geological Maps of the area
 Standard data sheets for logging, drilling records and sampling

The data gathered will be assessed and analyzed to be used during field investigation, to determine the
extent of additional data required for carrying out the services and to incorporate with the present
study for ground water monitoring and geo hazard study.

2.4.3 SITE INVESTIGATION

Core Drilling

DYNAMIC Geotechnics owns four rotary core drilling machines staffed with skilled man power/drillers
and complete and necessaries, a wide range of tools, and equipment’s. The company will conduct the
drilling operation by these rotary drilling machines in accordance with all current applicable ASTM and
professional standards. A team of multi-disciplinary professionals carry out the drilling including in situ
tests, logging, and sampling with the highest standard practiced following widely accepted and practiced
international procedures.

After the supervisor approval and conformation on the location and depth of boreholes, in-situ test
position, and sampling drilling will be commenced using hydraulically fed truck mounted Type rotary
core drilling machines.

The rigs will be equipped with double and single core barrels (HQ and NQ sizes) fitted with diamond or
tungsten carbide tipped bits and a reaming shell. Moreover, sufficient quantity of HQ and NQ rods, HW
and NW casing rods will be used in the course of the drilling activity. The rigs have sufficient capacity to
drill to a depth in excess of fifty meters which is far beyond the maximum depth specified for the
project.

The rigs will be equipped with double and single core barrels to ensure maximum core recovery and high
quality core samples of not less than 80mm and minimum borehole diameter in a sound rock will be
56mm.

Page 8
Contract Agreement

The use of rotary drilling will ensure recovery of continuous high quality soil and rock core samples. The
length of a single run will depend upon the prevailing geological conditions; however, the maximum run
will not exceed three meters.

Location and depth of boring

The positions of all boreholes shall be set out based on the site plans and the boring will be carried out
to a depth which includes all formation likely to be significantly affected by the structural loads.

The proposed drilling depth will have a maximum of 20m depth in soils and weathered rocks. However,
if solid rock is encountered, before reaching these depths, the drilling will proceed at least to 3.0m from
the top of the solid rock and based on RQD Value.

The actual location, spacing, and depth of borings will be dictated by dictated by the topography,
geologic conditions, visible soil conditions, and design considerations, and in accordance with the
practices set forth herein and basically as indicated in the TOR.

Core Recovery
Core drilling in rock or other strata, shall be conducted so as to obtain continuous cores with the
maximum practicable amount of core recovery. The first core run in each hole shall not exceed 0.5m in
length. Subsequent drill runs may be increased in length up to a maximum of 3m provided that the
percent recover y from the previous run exceeded 90 percent. The core barrel shall be removed from
the drilling hole as often as is required to obtain the best possible core recovery. When any recovery is
less than 90% for a full length core run longer than 0.5m, then the next run shall be shortened to one –
half the length of the last runs shorter than 0.5m will not be required. In weathered rock formations,
core barrels of appropriate type equipped with splittable inner tube liner will be employed in order to
ensure maximum quality and core recovery. As soon as the core of a given run is recovered, the top and
bottom will be marked and carefully placed in the core box.

Casing/Stabilizing
Where drilling is being carried out in any stratum, which is not sufficiently cohesive to stand firmly
without a casing, the hole shall be cased. Casing will be installed to stabilize boreholes only when a
particular stratum or caving zone is encountered and must be sealed or when drilling mud would have
an adverse effect on the soil to be sampled, such as a dry or water-sensitive formation. Cement grouting
could be employed for the stabilization of fractured, brecciated zones, or instead of casings.

In situ tests (Standard Penetration Test)

Standard penetration tests (SPTs) shall be carried out in soil layers in the boreholes at 1.50m depths at
interval of 2.0m throughout the boring depths in accordance with test procedure mentioned in test No.
19 of BS 1377: 1975 or ASTM D1586 “Standard Method for penetration Test and Split-Barrel Sampling of
Soil”. SPT test is carried by driving a standard ‘split spoon’ sampler using repeated blows of a 63.5kg
hammer falling through 762mm. Sample shall be taken from the split spoon sampler and sealed

Page 9
Contract Agreement

immediately in glass or plastic jars with air tight rubber ring or waxed paper seals and labeled with the
project name, boring number, sample number, sample depth, blows per 0.15m.the penetration
resistance during the first 150mm of penetration is ignored, because the soil is considered to have been
disturbed by the action of boring the hole.

Sampling, Handling, and Storage of samples

Both disturbed and undisturbed samples will be collected out of drill holes at the required depths and
locations. Soil rock and ground water sampling shall be as per BS 5930:1981, using the relevant
paragraphs.

Samples shall be recovered from split spoon sampler after every SPT. The samples shall be properly
sealed in plastic bags or small containers for MC determination and other index tests.

Undisturbed soil samples (thin wall samplings) shall be taken from cohesive material in boreholes from
3.0 meters depth by means of Shelby-Tube, which are taken by applying a constant hydraulic pressure in
the soil strata to be sampled. The samples will be sealed using non-shrinking wax immediately after
sampling and Shelby sample tubes will be marked with the project name, boring number, sample
number, sample depth, sample recovery and date of sampling. Tube samples will be stored upright in
wooden shipping containers and transported to the laboratory in an approved box (wooden containers)
lined with shock absorbing material. Whilst in the laboratory (and on site) the samples will be stored
horizontally.

Representative samples of rock will be collected if rock is encountered. Such samples will be carefully
wrapped and packed separately from the remaining cores.

Water samples will be collected if encountered for chemical analyses to determine its aggressiveness.

All core recovered shall be retained and placed in the core box. The depth will be indicated with durable
markers at the beginning and at the end of each drill run.

Labeling

All samples and core boxes will be suitably marked up and identified to show samples number, project
number, depth below ground surface, borehole number, and blow count.

Core Box

Page 10
Contract Agreement

Core boxes made of wood or other approved material and fitted with stout carrying handles, fastenings,
and hinged lids, as per ASTM D5079-90, section 7, will be utilized.

Each core box will be capable of holding approximately 5.0 m of core in parallel rows not exceeding
1.05m in length each and will contain partitions that shall be arranged to allow for convenient marking
of cores.

Data recording

All data required area to be recorded in accorded with the ASTM Standards. All material encountered in
each boring will be carefully examined and visually classified at the time of boring, and a written record
(borehole log) will be prepared. Soils/rocks will be described following widely used and practiced
procedures such as ASTM D 2488-93, BS 5930: 1981. The classification for final logs shall be based on
field information, the results of laboratory tests and further inspection of samples in the laboratory by
the geotechnical/Foundation Engineer preparing the report. The record will include, but not limited to:
