Activity for French III Grades 9-12

1- Using your Chromebook, go to the following link to learn about the "Mardi gras” in

France: https://www.joursferies.fr/mardi-gras.php

2- As a class, you are going to read aloud the text in its entirety.

3- Get with a partner and take turn speaking and listening to each other about what you have

learned about the "Mardi gras”.

4- While your partner is speaking, as you are listening to him/her write down what you have

learned from your partner that you have not retained from your reading. Then write a

summary of the text using your ideas and the ideas you got from your partner.

5- Then, I want you to read the first paragraph over and underline words in the French

language that are similar a word in the English language (this is what we call “cognates”)

and write down if they have the same meaning in both languages.

6- In that same paragraph, circle all the verbs, underline the subjects, and draw 2 lines under

the nouns. Then define in English the words “dignement” and “situe” (from the first

paragraph), “évènement”, “quartiers”, “confectionne”, “beignets”, et “intégrante” (from

the third paragraph).

7- You will then form groups of five. “You will go online and research this festivity (Mardi

gras) and take notes of new ideas that were not presented in the website from question #

1. You will present your finding to the rest of the class. Your presentation can be done as

a PowerPoint presentation, a video, a recorded voice presentation, or a poster. You may

use information from your culture if the Mardi gras is celebrated in your culture as well.

8- Pick one of the presentations that was done in the class and write a detailed

summarization of it (you cannot summarize your own presentation).
