1. Introduction

The exploration for P-14 was done by 1 borehole. The details for the same areas under:
Table 1 : Borehole coordinates and reduced levels

Easting Northing Reduced Level (m)
No (m)
P-14 588628.570 2518405.004 86.916 28.5

During investigations, after the hole has been made by a wet drilling method it is ensured
that the water level in the hole is the same as ground water level by depressing the water
level by pumping out the water. After this operation is completed water level is measured. If
the last two consecutive readings do not differ by more than 5 cm, the same is recorded as
water table.

2. Methodology
2.1. Field Methodology
2.1.1. Field Observations

In borehole P-14, top 2.0 m depth is brown colored silty sand with gravel in medium to
dense state. Below 2.0 to 16.5 m depth is brown colored clay in stiff to very stiff consistency.
This is followed by intermediate geo material. Below 18.0 m depth is This is followed by fine
grained basalt rock with hardness 5.0 to 6.0. Core recovery varies from 47 to 94.
SPT tests were conducted at 0.5, 1.0, 2.0, 3.0, 5.0, 7.5, 10.5, 13.5, 16.5 & 18.0 m. The
variation of SPT with depth is shown in figure 1. In case of sand & silty sand, correction for
overburden & dilatancy were applied.

2.1.2. Collection of Un Disturbed Samples

In each borehole, undisturbed samples shall be collected at every change of strata or every
3.0 m interval whichever is earlier. Undisturbed sampler tubes are made up of 100mm
diameter, 450mm long MS tubes provided with sampler head with ball check arrangement.
Samples shall be collected in such a manner that the structure of soil and its moisture
content do not get altered. The specifications for the accessories used for sampling and the
sampling procedure adopted conforms to IS:1892 and IS:2132. Undisturbed samples shall be
used to determine the shear parameters, natural moisture content and unit.

Figure 2 - Undistrubed Sample

7 number of Undisturbed Samples have been collected at this location at a depth of 1.5,
2.5, 4.0, 6.0, 9.0, 12.0 ,15.0 m and are sent to laboratory for testing.

4
2.1.3. Collection of Rock Samples

For drilling in rock, drilling was advanced by rotary core drilling method using double tube
core barrels with diamond bit. The maximum length of drill run maintained is 1.5m. Water
was used as the drilling fluid, care was taken to see that water into the hole, be minimum,
consistent with adequate removal of cutting from the hole and proper cooling of the bit.
At the end of each run, the drill rod string with core barrel is extracted from the borehole
and core is recovered from the core barrel. The ratio of total length of rock pieces collected
to length drilled, expressed as percentage and known as core recovery shall be recorded. To
obtain RQD, Rock Quality Designation, only those pieces of rock which are 10cm and longer
shall measure for their total length. The above length divided by length drilled, expressed as
percentage, shall be recorded as RQD.
A total of 91 core pieces have been recovered with recovery ranging from 47 to 94 and RQD
ranging from Nil to 73. The photograph of the core box (samples) are shown in Fig-3.

2.2.1. Laboratory Tests for Soil

A total of 15 (8 SPT and 7 UDS) samples have been collected and sent to the laboratory.
Soil samples shall be tested in the laboratory for determination of the following
characteristics and properties. The entire tests shall be conducted in accordance with the
procedures prescribed in IS: 2720.

4. Computation of Pile Capacity by various methods

4.1. Computation of Pile capacity by IRC 78
Pile capacity calculations according to IRC 78 have been attached in Annexure-4A.

4.2. Computation of Pile capacity by IS 14593

Pile capacity calculations according to IS 14593 have been attached in Annexure-4B.

5. Pile Settlement and Elastic Compression of pile

Pile Settlement and Elastic compression calculations have been attached in Annexure 5.

6. Recommendations and Conclusions

 Looking to the nature of subsoil present for P14 locations, it is suggested to go for pile
foundation.
 Automatic hammer is used for soil investigation. Efficiency of such automatic hammer is
about 85 to 95 % of the theoretical. Hence it is necessary to correct N autohammer to Nrope.

8
Considering efficiency of auto hammer on conservative 85 % (0.85/0.6). Hence the
average ratio can be taken as 1.4.
 There is no soft clay as per bore log and hence there will be no negative skin friction.
 Since core samples were not present/obtained in the initial 1.5m depth of the socket
Method 1 of IRC 78 is not applicable. Hence capacities for pile have been evaluated
based on Method 2 of IRC 78-2014 (IGM based) and IS 14593 (UCS based).
 Pile axial for the P-14 has been calculated based on method 2 as given in IRC 78-2014
and IS 14593. The detail calculations are presented in this report.
 Bored cast-in-situ pile 1.0 in diameter is recommended for the structure. The detail
calculations are presented in this report.

Where the rock is sound the strength of the foundation rock is generally much
in excess of the design requirement , provided the wall of the discontinuty

Settlement of Pile
Elastic Compression of Pile

Average Load on each pile of the Foundation(P) = 550000 kg

length of Pile(Dp) = 1900 cm
Diameter of Pile(d) = 100 cm
Area of Cross section of Pile(A) = 7853.982 cm2
Grade of Concrete(fck) = 35 N/mm2
Modulus of elastici,ty of pile material(Ep) = 295000 kg/cm2

From Structural Mechanics

Ss = P*L/A*Ep
= 0.45 cm
= 4.51 mm

Elastic Compression = 4.51 mm

Since the pile is socketed in rock / Intermediate Geo Materal and capacity due to friction above
the socket is Neglected.Hence Settlement Analysis is not required
