Introduction
This Guideline enables dealers and their customers to benefit from cost reductions made possible
through an established parts reusability and salvage program. Every effort has been made to provide the
most current and relevant information known to Caterpillar Inc. Since the Company makes ongoing
changes and improvements to its products, this Guideline must be used with the latest technical
information available from Caterpillar to ensure such changes and improvements are incorporated
where applicable.
For questions or additional information concerning this Guideline, contact Caterpillar Service
Operations Support, Dealer Support (309) 675-5434.

Summary
This Guideline provides a method to salvage cylinder block liner bores on 3400, C15, and C18 Engines.
This method uses a process known as the "step" bore operation. A "step", which is part of the cylinder
block casting, is created by machining an oversized bore in the block casing to a specified depth. A
sleeve is then inserted into the oversize bore and pressed against the "step". This "step" allows the
sleeve to be retained, thus providing a good seal.

Note: 4W-6061 Sleeves for this salvage procedure are available through Caterpillar parts distribution.
Sleeves may also be machined (prior to the salvage operation) using the specifications in Illustration 2
and Chart A.
1. If sleeves are being machined at the dealer, use Caterpillar material specification 1E0018 Cast Iron.
Be sure to machine the necessary number of sleeves prior to the salvage operation.
Note: Machine sleeve and bore to produce a 0.14 +/- 0.05 mm (.0055 +/- .0002 inch) diameter press fit.

3. Clean bore and sleeve with 4C-9500 Loctite Primer. Apply 4C-9506 High-Strength Loctite only to
the bore.
4. Shrink the sleeve (freeze) to insert and obtain the specified press fit. Install and hold the sleeve in
place until seated. Allow at least one hour cure time on the Loctite before finish machining.
5. Finish machining the inside of the sleeve to 153.90 ± 0.05 mm (6.059 ± .002 inch).
