Q. Derive the equation for velocity profile of a Newtonian Fluid flowing in a circular pipe of radius
r. The flow of the fluid is in the z direction. The Navier Stokes equation for cylindrical geometry is
the starting point. There is no flow in the r, or greek,"theta" direction.  The pipe is of length L. The
viscosity of the fluid is greek letter mu, and the density of the fluid is greek letter rho. In this
assignment you will have to derive the equation fir the velocity profile or, the variation of velocity
in the "r" direction at any point along the length of the pipe.

Navier-Stokes equation in cylindrical coordinates for constant density and constant viscosity is given

By:

w 1 1 2
∗∂ u
ρ∗
∂t (
∂ u u∗∂ u v∗∂ u r
+
∂z
+
∂r
+
∗∂ u
∂θ
= ρ∗g z− )
∂p
∂z
2
∂ u r
+ μ∗( 2 +
∂z
∗∂ u 2
∂r
∂ u r2
+ 2+
∂r ∂θ 2
)
…………(1)

The conditions used are:

 The velocity is only in z direction, v=w=0

 The flow is steady, u does not change with time, ∂u/∂t=0
 There is no body force, ρ∗g z =0
 The flow is uniform, u does not change with position, ∂u/∂z=0

The equation (1) becomes:

1
2∗du
dp d u r
=μ∗( 2 + )
dx dr dr

r∗dp d2u du
=μ∗( 2 ∗r+ )
dx dr dr
Integrating w.r.t r

r 2∗1
∗dp
2
=μ∗¿
dx

r 1∗1
∗dp
2 du u u c 1
=μ∗( − + + )
dx dr r r r
again Integrating w.r.t r

r 2∗1
∗dp
4
=μ∗(u+ c 2+ c 1∗ln r)
dx

u=r 2∗1
∗dp
4∗μ …………………………..(2)
+ c 2+c 1∗lnr
dx

Applying boundary conditions to get c1 and c2,

 At r=0, u=u(max),which is finite value, As ln(0) is indefinite ,c1=0

−r 0 2∗1
∗dp
 At r=r0 ,u=0, 4∗μ
c 2=
dx

Hence equation 2 becomes:

1
∗dp
4∗μ …………………………………..Hence proved.
u= ∗(r 2−r 02 )
dx
