This Week’s Learning Goal


• I can identify food groups in MyPlate.
• I can name foods belonging under each food group.
• I can name healthy and unhealthy food.
• I can show a set of gross motor skills.
Lesson Activities
For this lesson, speak to your child about the importance of food and why we need to eat a balanced meal
to stay healthy. Also, help your child understand the importance of exercise and how it contributes to a
healthy lifestyle. The goals for this lesson are as follows: (1) to increase students’ understanding of
MyPlate Dietary Guidelines, (2) how to achieve a balanced diet, and (3) to create an environment where
physical activity is present.

Activity #1: What does it mean to be healthy?


• Have your child listen and watch to the read aloud of Very Hungry Caterpillar on YouTube (see
below for resource).
• Discuss with your child the meaning of being healthy and what can they do to live a healthy
lifestyle.
• Discuss with your child the consequences of living an unhealthy lifestyle.

Activity #2: What are some healthy food choices?


• Have your child watch YouTube link to help him/her recognize and understand the difference
between healthy and unhealthy food (see below for resource).
• Have a discussion with your child about what he/she learned about MyPlate after watching the
video.
• Discuss each food group section with your child.
• Have your child understand the different food groups by completing resources attached (see below
for resource) or having your child sort/categorize food found at home.

Activity $3: Why is it important to exercise?


• Practice set of skills such as skipping, galloping, catching & throwing a ball, and bouncing a ball
• Incorporate SPARK lessons with simple household items (see below for resource).
Assignments
Activity #1: What does it mean to be healthy?
• Active discussion with our child about what it means to be healthy.
• Have your child draw his/her favorite scene from the read aloud of Very Hungry Caterpillar.

Activity #2: What are some healthy food choices? (see below for resource)
• Print to cut or draw pictures of various foods and group them by healthy vs. unhealthy
• Print to cut or draw pictures of various foods and sort them by each food group
• Complete Free Healthy worksheets
• Work on My Plate Worksheet and healthy vs. unhealthy worksheet
• Create flip book of the different food groups

Activity $3: Why is it important to exercise?


• Complete some SPARK activities at home (see below for resource)
• Practice set of gross motor skills such as skipping, galloping, catching & throwing a ball, and
bouncing a ball outside! Go outside and get some Vitamin D! J
