PLURAL POSSESSIVE PRONOUNS/ADJECTIVES
Plural possessive pronouns don’t exist in English the same way they do in
Serbian. In English, if you want to say She is my sister or They are my sisters, the
word my stays the same in both examples – meaning the singular and plural form
are the same. But, in Serbian, singular and plural form are different. And this
brings us to our lesson for today – the plural possessive pronouns.
In the previous lesson we learned the singular possessive pronouns. And we said
that pronouns in Serbian belong to the Open Class Words which means that they
change their form depending on the gender, number or case of the word they
refer to (usually a noun). Because pronouns reflect gender in Serbian, we have 3
forms of possessive pronouns to learn for each gender category, for singular and
for plural.
Remember, for ja (I or me), the singular possessive pronouns are moj, moja,
moje, and they all mean my (masculine, feminine, neuter).
For plural masculine, we simply add i to the word moj (singular masculine
possessive pronoun), and we get moji.
Do you remember how to change a feminine word into a plural? For example,
let’s take the word žena which means woman or wife. When you want to make a
singular feminine noun plural, you substitute the a ending with an e ending. The
plural is žene. Following that pattern, feminine plural possessive pronoun is moje.
If moja is the singular possessive pronoun, and we want to make it plural, we
simply substitute the a ending with an e. When we do this, the word becomes
moje.
Moje is my singular neuter possessive pronoun. To make it plural we substitute
the e ending for an a ending, and we get moja, which is plural possessive neuter.
Remember how the personal pronoun ono means it, and the plural for ono is
ona, which means they neuter. The pattern remains the same with plural neuter
possessive pronouns.

ONI/ONE/ONA - NJIHOV/NJIHOVA/NJIHOVO (singular) –

(meaning their friend, their friends – masculine)
Example: njihova prijateljica (singular feminine) - njihove prijateljice (plural feminine)

Example: njihovo dete (singular neuter) - njihova deca (plural neuter)
(meaning their child, their children – neuter)
How do you say They are my friends (masculine)? Oni su moji prijatelji. As a reminder,
prijatelj means friend and it’s a singular masculine noun. In order to make it plural,
we add an i to the end of the word since it’s masculine, and now everything else
must match. On which means he (a masculine personal pronoun for 3rd person
singular) becomes a plural masculine pronoun oni because it refers to they (a
masculine personal pronoun for 3rd person plural). So now moj, (a singular
masculine pronoun which means my), becomes moji (a plural masculine pronoun
which means my). And we get Oni su moji prijatelji. We have the gender
(masculine) and number (plural) agreement in this sentence.
