Lesson Title: Multicultural Vessel Design / Throwing a Cylinder Grade Level: 9-12
Daily Objectives:
Handbuilding- Given a slap base, slip, clay tools, and clay, students will continue to
work on their 7 coil high vessel that demonstrates structurally sound construction.
Wheel throwing- Given 15 oz of clay, wheel, water, and an elephant ear sponge,
students will accurately center clay and pull a 3” tall cylinder.
Assessment Criteria:
Handbuilding- craftsmanship, structurally sound, evidence of research, coil technique,
form.
Wheelthrowing- uniformity in thickness of walls, craftsmanship, centering.
Teaching Resources Needed to Support the Lesson: Note: All background materials, research
documents, and handouts should be listed below and included as attachments.

Assessment made by cutting 3” cylinder in half with a while tool directly after
throwing, and giving each student personal feedback on ways they could improve their
pulling techniques to obtain a perfectly pulled form.
