VA:Cn10.1.III

Overall Lesson Objective:

Handbuilding-
Given a demonstration on coil building, a discussion on functionality of vessels, a
demonstration on vessel design, and examples of vessels used by different cultures
around the world, students will research and select a vessel from a different culture
and replicate its form and style of surface design using clay and coil building
techniques.
Wheelthrowing-
Given a demonstration on centering, coning, opening clay, and pulling walls of clay,
students will demonstrate their understanding of wheel throwing by throwing a 4”
cylinder that displays even wall thickness.
Daily Objectives:
Handbuilding- Given a demonstration on coil building, slipping, and scoring, students
will construct a 7 coil high vessel that demonstrates craftsmanship and is structurally
sound.
Wheel throwing- Given 15 oz of clay and a demonstration on centering and coning,
students will actively practice centering clay and coning.
Assessment Criteria:
Handbuilding- craftsmanship, structurally sound, evidence of research, coil technique,
form.
Wheelthrowing- uniformity in thickness of walls, craftsmanship, centering.

Teaching Resources Needed to Support the Lesson: Note: All background materials, research
documents, and handouts should be listed below and included as attachments.
Packets on multicultural vessels, vessel design handout.

Art Materials Necessary for the Lesson:

Clay, clay tools, slip, wheels, plastic bags, water.
