Lesson 1

Hot potato

Instructions 1. Students in a group of 4 set up on each cone in a 4x4m grid

2. Students to pass to players in aim to get them out if they drop the ball

Variations & Run to another cone and back after you have passed the ball off
Extensions Do a dynamic exercise on the spot eg. push up, after you have received the ball

LEST L - In our tute groups of 4 however teacher should consider what size group they need
to maximise participation

E - 4 cones per group
S - 5mx5m grids
T - 5 minutes

RINK Level 1

KTP’s Receiving
Track, reach, give, pinkies/thumbs

Sending
Flat pass: step, shift, flick
Spiral pass: step, shift, roll

Teaching notes Ensure that students are still using correct technique

the whole class
would be set

Transition to next Students remain in groups of 4 and in the same square.

activity

Box passing

Instructions 1. Students in a group of 4 set up on a cone in a 4x4m grid

2. Students to throw in a clockwise direction until the teacher blows the whistle and
students are to throw the other way

Variations & Only spiral passes / only flat passes

Extensions Student who sends the pass must do a push up/run to a different cone immediately
after and before receiving the next catch.

LEST

RINK Level 1
Box passing

KTP’s Receiving
Track, reach, give, pinkies/thumbs

Sending
Flat pass: step, shift, flick
Spiral pass: step, shift, roll

Teaching notes Blow the whistle regularly, keeping it interesting

Add progressions after 2 minutes of casual throwing

Diagram

Transition to next 4 students remain working in the same square however are now working in 2’s
activity

Run around the boundary

Instructions 1. Students in groups of 2

2. Run around the grid in an imaginary circle passing to each other on the move

Variations & Progression:

Extensions Teacher blows the whistle once: students must turn and throw/run the opposite way
Teacher blows the whistle twice: students must swap rolls and then continue.

Regression:
One person is stationary and throws to another student on the move.

LEST L - students complete the drill in pairs. 4 students working in 1 circle.

E - 4 cones, 1 ball
S - 5x5m square
T - 5 minutes

RINK Rink 2

KTP’s Receiving
Track, reach, give, pinkies/thumbs

Sending
Flat pass: step, shift, flick
Spiral pass: step, shift, roll

Teaching notes Teacher to emphasise safety and ensure that students have awareness of where
surrounding students are

Diagram
Run around the boundary

Transition to next Students remain in square with their groups of 4, put one ball to the side.
activity

Missing marker

Instructions 1. Students in groups of 3

2. Students passing in a triangle, one cone will be empty and therefore other
students must run onto the ball to receive it on the move.

Variations & Lead within the cones

Extensions

LEST L - students remain in their groups of 4, but one person is the coach on the outside.
Swap in after 1 minute.
E - 4 cones, 1 ball
S - 5x5m square
T - 5 min

RINK Rink 2

KTP’s Receiving
Track, reach, give, pinkies/thumbs

Sending
Flat pass: step, shift, flick
Spiral pass: step, shift, roll

Teaching notes Encourage students to catch the other student off guard in order to

Diagram

Transition Break. Leave the cones where they are

Sending and receiving on the move

Instructions 1. Students work in pairs

2. Students are lined up parallel 5m apart on separate cones
3. Drill begins by one student passing to their partner on the other cone who receive
the ball and then jogs to a cone 3 (see diagram) 15m away.
4. Student A who passed the ball waits until student B has passed cone 2 (see
diagram) cone and then sprints onto the ball to receive the ball on the move at
cone 3.

Variations

LEST L - students work in pairs but 3-4 pairs can work in the same area
E - 6 cones, 1 ball
S - 15x5m
T - 10 mins
Sending and receiving on the move

KTP’s Receiving
Track, reach, give, pinkies/thumbs

Sending
Flat pass: step, shift, flick
Spiral pass: step, shift, roll

Teaching notes Ensure students are timing leads

Diagram

Transition to next Students to leave cones in the right line where they are. Teacher to ask 5 students
activity take a cone on the left line and take x amount of steps out to form a diagonal line.

Staggered straight

Instructions 1. Students line up on a staggered (diagonal) cone

2. Pass the ball down the line and then run to the cone parallel
3. Once the ball reaches player E students must time their leads and run on to the
ball to receive it on the move
4.

Variations & Have two groups going at once and make it a competition: first to 3 rotations
Extensions Have 2 groups facing each other doing the same drill but starting at different points,
important that students time their leads and learn to avoid a defender.
Staggered straight

LEST L - groups of 4 or 5
E - 8 cones, 1 ball
S - 15x15m
T - 10

LEST was set up in this drill by using 4 cones from the previous drill already in place.
Then to create the stagger, Mark asked 4 students to get a cone and walk out
diagonally, placing the cone inline with the straight lined cone. He guided the students
into forming the desired diagonal line

RINK Rink 2

Lesson Objective Display the ability to time your leads and receive the ball on the move
Exhibit the ability to avoid an oncoming defender when receiving a pass
KTP’s Receiving
Track, reach, give, pinkies/thumbs

Sending
Flat pass: step, shift, flick
Spiral pass: step, shift, roll

Teaching notes Emphasise timing your leads

Transition Completion of the tute.
