CHAPTER 1

The Problem and its Background

Introduction

This study aims to assess the effects of Training and Development in the job

Performance among the Employees in Maynilad. The purpose of Training and

Development in the efficiency of the organization is the experiences of the employees in

the workplace. Behavioural Science concepts like motivation and enhanced productivity

could be used in such improvements in employee output. Training could be one of the

factors used to achieve such improvements through the effective and efficient use of

learning resources. Training is a systematic development of knowledge; skills and

attitudes required by employees to perform adequately base on the given task or job.

Training and development should be positively affect employee performance, so

we should know what would be the consequences if the company is not doing a proper

training and development for their employees? If they do implement a training and

development in their company, is there an improvement in terms of attitude, skills and

knowledge of the employees? Nowadays, we should know what role training and

development can play in today’s organization to build tomorrow’s workforce.

Training and development play an important role in the effectiveness of

organizations and to the experiences of people in work. Training has implications for

productivity, health and safety at work and personal development. All organizations

employing people need to train and develop their staff. Such investment can take the form

of employing specialist training and development staff and paying salaries to staff

undergoing training and development. Investment in training and development is

generally regarded as good management practice to maintain appropriate expertise now

and in the future.

Background of the Study

Improved capabilities, knowledge and skills of the talented workforce proved to

be a major source of competitive advantage in an organization. To develop the desired

knowledge, skills and abilities of the employees, to perform well on the job it requires

effective training programs that may also effect employee motivation and commitment.

In order to prepare their workers to do their job as desired, organizations provides

training as to optimize their employee’s potential. Most of the firms, by applying long

term planning, invest in the building new skills by their workforce, enabling them to cope

with the uncertain conditions that they may face in future, thus, improving the employee

performance through superior level of motivation and commitment. When employees

recognize their organization interest in them through offering training programs, they in

turn apply their best efforts to achieve organizational goals, and show high performance

on job. Employees are the most valuable asset of every company as they can make or

break a company’s reputation and can adversely affect profitability. Employees often are

responsible for the great bulk of necessary work to be done as well as customer

satisfaction and the quality of products and events. Without proper training, employees

both new and current do not receive the information and develop the skill sets necessary

for accomplishing their tasks at their maximum potential. Employees who undergo proper

training tend to keep their jobs longer than those who do not. Training is a necessity in

the workplace. Without it, employees don't have a firm grasp on their responsibilities or

duties. Employee training refers to programs that provide workers with information, new

skills, or professional development opportunities.

Training is a learning process that seeks to bring about permanent improvement in

the ability and behavior of employees by enabling them to learn new skills, knowledge,

attitude and behavior. Training is a systematic process of altering the behavior and or

attitude of employees in a direction to achieve organizational goals. To train to perform,

train to improve and train to develop have become the factors of the present-day

corporate. Training in a general sense refers to a planned effort by an organization to

facilitate employees in acquiring skill, attitude and behavior that are critical for

successful performance on the job. Every organization needs to have well-trained

manpower to perform various activities. Training is essential even if the employees

highly meet the job demands. This is due to constantly changing business models and

technological advancements which necessitate possession of different skill sets by the

employees.

Moreover, jobs are becoming increasingly complex. Training helps employees

improving the preference on the current job or prepares them for an intended job.

Development covers not only those activities which improve job performance but also

those which bring about growth of the personality. Development is intended to equip the

persons to earn promotion and hold greater responsibility. Training and development are

closely related to each other, training a person for bigger and higher job is development.

This may well include not only imparting specific skills and knowledge but also

inculcating certain personality and mental attitudes. Training includes updating

knowledge, skill and attitude in tune with the changing requirements of the organization.

Accordingly, the training process ensures the improvement in the participant’s behavior

and organizational effectiveness.

Statement of the Problem

This research undertaking aims to determine the effects of Training and

Development in the job performance among the employees in Maynilad. Specifically it

seeks to answer the following variables:

1. How may the demographic profile of the respondent be described in terms of

the following variables:

1.1 Age;

1.2 Gender;

1.3 Monthly income;

1.4 Highest educational attainment;

1.5 Civil status;

1.6 Length of service;

1.7 Position in the company:

2. How the respondents assess the effects of Training and Development in the

job performance among the employees in Maynilad in terms of:

2.1 Attitude

2.2 Skills; and

2.3 Knowledge

3. Is there a significant difference in the views of the respondent of the effects of

Training and Development in the job performance among employees in

Maynilad when they are grouped according to their Demographic Profile?

Hypothesis

The hypothesis is drawn on the above statement of the problem:

HO.1. There is no significant different in the views of the respondent of the effects of

Training and Development in the job performance among employees in Maynilad when

they are grouped according to their Demographic profile.

Scope and Delimitation of the study

The study will be conducted to assess the training and development of Maynilad

Water Services Inc. The study shall only include the regular employees of the branch of

the Maynilad Balara who are presently working in the company. It will only focus on the

attitude, skills and knowledge of employee benefits and other variables expressed in the

statement of the problem.

Significance of the study

The finding of the study is beneficial to the following:

Management of Maynilad: The findings of this study may be of great help to the

management to continue improving their training and development.

Employees: As a result of the study, employees will increase their awareness on the

process and future training and development of Maynilad Water Services Inc.

HR: The study will provide better guide to the practices in improving the training and

development of Maynilad Water Services Inc.

Future Researchers: The result of this study would be the baseline and will encourage

future researchers to have studies regarding the training and development of Maynilad

Water Services Inc.
