What Great Listeners Actually Do

1st Analysis Paper

Listening is one of the most effective communication devices and a mechanism used to
interpret, express a meaning and respond to both verbal and nonverbal messages. An effective
listener would make an individual have a broader and deeper understanding of what the speaker
is saying. According to the article, there are some beliefs to consider to be an effective listener,
be silent while others are talking, listening through facial expressions and verbal sounds, and
being able to repeat what others have said. But there are methods that we can actually do to
execute the two-way dialog.

Based on the research conducted by Jack Zenger and Joseph Folkman, being silent while
listening is not proof that an individual listens and cannot be considered as a great listener,
because it is stated in the article that the two-way dialog should be implemented for the benefit
of both parties. Additionally, asking question can guarantee that the listeners is actually listening
to what the speaker is saying and through this the listener can clarify things. Moreover, to
become more effective communication is when the speaker feels supported through making little
noises such as “hmm”, “ok”, etc. and by appropriate approach by the listeners especially to the
word choice while interacting to the speaker, and reducing the concept of competition. Effective
listeners were inclined to give suggestions for the improvement and betterment of the speaker
and to the audience. As the result of the research, it suggests that a good listener needs to be like
a trampoline rather than just a sponge.

In general, the article of Jack Zenger and Joseph Folkman is a good example on how to
become an effective listener. the two authors discussed the difference between the beliefs of
being effective listener from being a great effective listener. Developing listening skills is a must
to everyone especially to us students for us to improve ourselves and to reduce the
misunderstanding that leads to a conflict.
