PAVEMENT:
The upper-most layer of road
surface.
There are two types
1. Flexible
2. Rigid
FLEXIBLE PAVEMENT:
Material: Bitumen, Tar and Asphalt
Load transfer :grain-to-grain.
The stresses decreses with increse in depth.
TYPES OF FLEXIBLE
PAVEMENT:
The following types of construction have been
used in flexible pavement:
1. Conventional layered flexible
pavement,
2. Full - depth asphalt pavement,
3. Contained rock asphalt mat (CRAM).
RIGID PAVEMENTS
Material: Cement Concrete
Load transfer: with wider area.
COMPARISION:
FLEXIBLE RIGID
• Aggregates and bitumen • pcc
• Interlocking of Aggregates • Flexural strength
• No of layers
• No joints • Only two layers
• Initial cost low, high • No of joints
maintenance. • Initial cost high, low
• Open in 24 hrs maintenance.
• Open in min 14 days.
