Nozzle Inner Sidewall Cover-
Plate

Applicable: All MS9001F/FA gas turbines

1. Purpose

Notify users that an improved design inner sidewall cover-plate is available. The
improved design component is being used in current production gas turbines and
has more robust features that reduce the potential for cracking.

2. Background/Discussion

The stage-1 nozzle assembly utilises inner sidewall cover-plates to provide a

high pressure coolant source for impingement cooling of the nozzle aft-inner
sidewall. Recent experience shows the original inner sidewall cover-plate and its
weld have cracked on some units. The cracking is believed to be caused by a
combination of conditions including thermal stress and welding anomalies.
There has been no consequential damage as a result of the cracking.

An improved design inner sidewall cover-plate is being used on current

production units and incorporates an increased plate thickness along with
thermal relief dimples. The increased plate thickness improves weldability and
the thermal relief dimples provide thermal flexibility between the relatively cold
cover-plate and the hot sidewall.

3. Recommendations

At the next hot gas path inspection or repair interval, or during any other outage
involving hot gas path components, GE recommends replacement of original
design inner sidewall cover-plates with the improved design. There are a total of
24 inner sidewall cover-plates used in the stage-1 nozzle assembly. The repair
should be performed by an authorised Service Centre.

For reference, the below table provides drawing numbers for original design
inner sidewall cover-plates and the improved design. Unit specific identification
of the inner sidewall cover-plate can be determined from the Parts List and
Drawing Volume of the Service Manuals provided with the gas turbine (reference
Model List item 1401).
