Assume missing data, if any, suitably

Q.1 Consider a CSTR in which irreversible exothermic reaction is taking place. The (20)
heat of reaction is removed by a coolant medium that flows in a jacket around the
reactor, as shown in the figure. The heat released by the exothermic reaction is
cA,, I
vF sigmoidal function of temperature T, while
heat removed by the coolant is linear
function of T. The two curves intersect at
three points. Check for the stability of
these three points of equilibria. How will
you ensure that the unstable equilibrium
point is also stabilised?

Q.2 Plot dimensionless response of first order lag to a step input. What variable will you take (20)
along abscissa and why? What should be its maximum value and why? What variable
will you take along ordinate and why? What should be its maximum value and why?
What is the advantage of this plot being dimensionless? Justify your answer with
suitable example(s)

Q.3 We have a tank with a restriction at the outlet. But unlike regular first order models, this (20)
restriction is handling turbulent flow. On account of this turbulence, the relationship
between outflow Rate Fo and hydrostatic pressure h is not linear. It is rather given by
Fo = fl -a.; where f3 = constant.
Develop a mathematical model of this system. Deduce static gain and time constant of
this system. Are these constants really constant? Comment on your answer.
Q.4 Some systems are inherently second order systems. Some other first order systems (20)
increase their order on account of feedback control. In case you agree or disagree with
the above statements, select a suitable example of each. Develop their mathematical
model to support your answer.
Q.5 Interaction makes the process slow. Do you agree with this statement? Select suitable (20)
examples of interacting and non-interacting systems. Develop mathematical model of
these two systems. Deduce time constants of these two systems to support your answer.
In case you don't agree with the statement, prove it otherwise.
