3.2 The student will investigate and understand simple
machines and their uses. Key concepts include
a) purpose and function of simple machines;
b) types of simple machines;
c) compound machines; and
d) examples of simple and compound machines
found in the school, home, and work
environments.
In this activity, students will understand the relationship between
the force applied to an object and resulting motion of objects.
The student will have a better appreciation of how simple
machines are used every day to make moving, lifting, pushing,
and pulling objects easier.
Begin the class by introducing the idea of simple machines and
what their purpose is. Simple machines are used every day to
make work easier by reducing the force needed to move an
object. Ask the students to name some simple objects you can
think of and how it can help make a task easier. Give an example
of a real-life scenario and point out the qualities that make it
useful.
After this introduction into the topic, introduce the online simple
machines simulation. This module introduces six types of simple
machines – lever, pulley, wheel and axle, wedge, screw, and
inclined plane. In this simulation the students are asked to label
the different types of simple machines by filling in the blank – a
vocabulary is included to help aid. Critical thinking is required.
The website provides more information about how this module
works and how it educates students on simple machines. This
activity is very useful in familiarizing the topic by filling in the
blank. The students should complete the demo and provide
evidence of finishing to the teacher. Students should make note
of the different simple machines and their functions.

