Section A/Question 1: H Gong
This question examines students on yarn formation principles in rotor spinning and friction spinning, and
calls for comparison of the two principles. It is evident that most students struggled in answering this
question, 16 out of 28 students did not pass the 50% passing mark. The average mark for this question
is 11/25 (44%).
Section A/Question 2: X Chen
This question is set on the cloth formation process and measures to improve fabric weaveability. Many
students struggled for this question too particularly some found it hard to establish the beat-up resistance
expressions correctly. 15 out of 28 students did not pass the 50% passing mark. The average mark for
this question is 12/25 (48%)
Section A/Question 3: A Fernando
This is on warp knitting, asking for information on overlap, underlap, and open and close stitches, as well
as on machine construction. Students were also asked to explain some lapping diagrams. In general,
student performed moderately well achieve and average of 14/25 (56%), but having 12 out of 28 students
failing the 50% passing mark.
Section B/Question 4: X Chen
This optional question is on the design of two 3D fabrics, one orthogonal, another multilayer, and it
attracted 20 answers. Student handled this question better and an average of 17/25 (68%) was secured,
with 4 failing the 50% passing mark.
Section B/Question 5: A Fernando
This question again is about warp knitting but emphasising on properties and applications as well as
features of the warp knitted locknit structure. Four students answered the question with two passing the
50% passing mark. The average mark for this question is 10/25 (40%).
Section B/Question 6: H Gong
Eight students opted for this question, which asks for the comparison between the ring spinning and air-
jet spinning. An average mark 14/25 (56%) is achieved, with two failed to reach the 50% passing mark.
