Continuity of a function

Continuity at a point

A function is said to be continuous at x = a; if

Lim f (x) = f (a) Continuity means a

x→a
graph without break

LHL = RHL = f (a)

Reasons of Discontinuity
12th CBSE: CONTINUITY AND DIFFERENTIABILITY FULL REVISION

Reasons of Discontinuity

O a b c
LHL ≠ RHL at x = a
(i) lim f (x) does not exist
x→a

(ii) f (x) is not defined at x = b LHL = RHL at x = b, but f (b) is not defined
LHL = RHL at x = c, f (c) is also
lim f (x) ≠ f (c)
(iii) x→c defined, but these are not equal

Continuity in an open interval

A function f (x) is said to be continuous in an open
interval (a, b) if f (x) is continuous at each and every point of (a, b)
12th CBSE: CONTINUITY AND DIFFERENTIABILITY FULL REVISION

Continuity in closed interval

A function f (x) is said to be continuous in [a, b] if
(i) it is continuous in (a, b)

(ii) lim f (x) = f (a) right continuous at

x → a+ x=a

(iii) lim f (x) = f (b) left continuous at

x → b– x=b

Algebra of continuous function

❑ Addition, subtraction of two continuous function makes a

continuous function.

❑ Product of two continuous functions is continuous and ratio

is also continuous provided denominator is not equal to zero
at the point where we are checking the continuity.

❑ Composition of two continuous functions is also a continuous

function.
12th CBSE: CONTINUITY AND DIFFERENTIABILITY FULL REVISION

Points to Remember
Polynomial functions are continuous everywhere

sinx, cosx, |x| are also continuous everywhere

π
tan x is continuous everywhere except odd multiple of
2

log x is continuous in (0, ∞)

SOME RULES FOR DIFFERENTIATION

1. The derivative of a constant function is zero i.e.

2. The derivative of constant times a function is constant times

the derivative of the function, i.e.

3. The derivative of the sum or difference of two function is the

sum or difference of their derivatives, i.e.,

4. PRODUCT RULE OF DIFFERENTIATION

The derivative of the product of two functions =

(first function) x (derivative of second function) + (second function) x
(derivative of first function)
I.e.,

6. DERIVATIVE OF A FUNCTION OF A FUNCTION (CHAIN RULE)

If y is a differentiable function of t and t is a differentiable function of x i.e.

y = f(t) and t = g(x), then

Similarly, if y = f(u) , where u = g(v) and v = h(x), then
