TEST 1 CHAPTER 3 “MOTION”
Q 1: Derive an expression for Tension in the string and acceleration in the
string when two bodies having different masses are connected by the string at
each end, when :
(i) Both the bodies moves vertically
(ii) One body move vertically and the other moves on a frictionless
horizontal surface
Q 2: Define Elastic and In‐elastic collision. Also state Law of conservation of
Momentum. Two spherical bodies of different masses moving with different
velocities along the same line collide elastically with one another. Find
expressions for final velocities of both the bodies.
Q 3: A car is waiting at a traffic signal and when it turns green, the car starts
ahead with constant acceleration of 3 m/s2. At the same time, a buss travelling
with a constant speed of 12 m/s overtakes and pass the car.
(i) How fast beyond its starting point will the car overtakes the bus?
(ii) How fast will the car be moving?
Q 4: A 50 gm bullet is fired into 15 kg block that is suspended by a long thread
so that it can swing as a pendulum. If the block is displaced so that its
center of gravity rises by 5 cm. What was the speed of the bullet?
Q 5: A body is placed on an inclined plane. Find the expression for its
downward acceleration when:
(i) Friction is present.
(ii) Friction is absent.

TEST 1 CHAPTER 11 “HEAT”
Q 1: Show that coefficient of volumetric expansion is three times the
coefficient of linear expansion.
Q 2: Derive the expression of pressure of a gas based on Kinetic Molecular
Theory.
Q 3: State 1st Law of Thermodynamics and list all applications of it and explain
any one of them.
Q 4: Define the following :
(i) Specific Heat (ii) Cp (iii) Cv
Q 5: A Carnot engine whose low temperature reservoir as 200 K has an
efficiency of 50%. It is desired to increase the efficiency to 75%. By how
many degrees must the temperature of low temperature reservoir be
decreased if temperature of high reservoir remains constant?
Q 6: A steel bar is 10 m in length and ‐2.5 ˚C. What will be the change in length
when it is at 250 ˚C. (β for steel is 9.9 x 10‐8 K‐1 ).
Q 7: Calculate root mean square velocity of two hydrogen molecules at 100 ˚C.
Q 8: A 7 kg iron block is taken from the furnace where it was at a “x”
temperature (˚C) and then it was placed in a large block of ice at 0 ˚C.
Assuming that all the heat utilizes by iron to melt the ice of 3 kg. Find the
temperature “x”.
