at American International University-Bangladesh (AIUB). I was assigned to work as a Teaching
Assistant in the following labs of Data Structure. In the Data Structure labs the main topics t Overall,
my internship experience has been great this semester. As Teacher’s Assistant I, have gained
firsthand experience with classroom teaching, lab works and student management. Additionally, I
have also had a considerable amount of student interaction on multiple levels: helping, advising, and
providing feedback. My supervisors were very open minded and allowed me to interact with the

1. INTRODUCTION

Internship Report Department of Computer Science Page 6 of 24

1.1. Rationale
Internship reports mainly provide the faculty a basis for grading the student for the
internship credits. Furthermore the student’s responsibility increases from doing practical
work to a theoretical representation of the practical work. To do this the student has to plan
and gather information throughout the work process.
Nowadays a crucial part of the academic process is to transform theoretical knowledge into
practical knowledge. In this report the opposite is being done, this allows the supervisor to
understand what the student has learned while being under employment of a company or
organization.
While writing the report the student gets the opportunity to show their technical writing
skills and the depth of their research and understanding of the work. Being an intern the most
difficult part is to apply all the theoretical knowledge they have gained, throughout their
academic years into practical work.
In this regard I have had the opportunity to work under the same university, American
International University-Bangladesh (AIUB) where I have completed my undergraduate
degree as a teacher’s assistant.

1.2. Background
American International University - Bangladesh (AIUB) is a government approved private
university founded in 1994 by Dr. Anwarul Abedin. The university is an independent

2. ACTIVITIES
I was assigned for the course of Data Structure for both of the classes. To deliver knowledge of a high
standard is crucial in an organization like American International University-Bangladesh (AIUB). All
along this was my main activity.

2.1. Work Load

The main responsibility was to assist the teacher in the lab. This was done by solving doubts
and providing feedback to students. The workload was distributed to one lab task per week.
The faculties provided the whole course outline in the beginning of each terms of the
semester. The theoretical part of the lab tasks were taught in the class allotted for theoretical
discussion.
Both of the labs that I was an intern in began at 2pm in the afternoon and ended at 5pm. This
timing is universal to the whole of the university for labs of computer science. The 3 hours
are used to implement the theoretical knowledge gained in the 2 hour theory lecture.

2.2. Organization-wide
The course of data structure is under the Faculty of Science and Technology (FSIT).
American International University-Bangladesh has some prescribed rules and regulations for
teaching and evaluating students. The evaluation procedure is shown in Table 2.

2.3. Other relevant activities

As the teacher’s assistant I have gained firsthand experience with teaching in a classroom,
helping the students with doubts and providing feedback. I have also gained the experience
of working on a professional environment where the faculties treated me as colleagues,
although junior, this was a new experience for me as this is the first time I have worked in
the field of teaching and academics. Previous encounters with this field was as a student
where I was on the opposite end of the teacher student relation. As co-instructor I had to
understand the level of understanding of the students and help them accordingly. As
different students have different levels of intellect it is not possible for the faculty in charge
to provide feedback and help each and every student so the responsibility of interacting with
every student was a crucial activity. While interacting personally with students, I often use
attending, challenging, and action oriented skills. For instance, I praise if someone answers
correctly, and if someone answers wrongly I correct them and explain them where they went
wrong and provide them with the opportunity to improve themselves.
Another very important activity was to assist the faculty with evaluation of the examination.
This let me display my honesty and proficiency in the subject. My supervisor were very
open minded and helped me out whenever there was any issue with any student. They
provided constructive feedback to improve my presentation and management skills. This has
been a very positive and valuable learning experience for me. They have a broad
understanding of various learning theories and have helped me to utilize different teaching
styles when presenting information to the students. I have been actively involved in the
implementation of the course, and, subsequently, have practiced/improved student
management, communication, leadership, mediation, and facilitation skills.

3. CONSTRAINTS/CHALLENGES
Under the stewardships of dedicated and visionary founders, dynamic management, competent
faculty and skillful support staff, the university continues to be the venue for change and producing
leaders in various arenas of endeavors. Thus I have not faced any particular challenge that wasn’t
faceable and didn’t have any major issues during the internship.

3.1. Identified/Observed in the Organization

The most important reason for the existence of American International University –
Bangladesh is its great people: their graduates, students, faculty and management. Since the
commencement of its journey in 1994, AIUB has progressed by leaps and bounds both as an
institution and the programs it delivers to the students. The focus here is to impart quality
education and to train the students to become leaders of tomorrow in their chosen fields. A
university, it is said, makes a solemn pledge to uphold high standards and inculcate the same
in its students, so that when they graduate we expect them to gain recognition and acclaim in
the academia, society and industry. Working with partners and stakeholders from different
sectors both at home and abroad, AIUB has gained prominence in both academic programs
and management services. International accreditation of many of its programs now enables
the university’s students to attain admissions at many leading international academic
institutions for higher studies. The ISO Certification 9001-2008 with a scope on “Quality
Management Operation System for the University” is another evidence of quality. The Job
Placement of the graduates is enhanced due to AIUB’s reputation. AIUB’s milestone
achievements have been made possible by the able stewardship of dedicated and visionary
founders, dynamic management, competent faculty and skillful support staff. [ CITATION
AIU \l 1033 ]

3.2. Academic Preparation

As a teacher’s assistant I always try to prepare myself beforehand with the topic that is to be
taught on the successive classes. This helped me reply to students more confidently and with
more assurance. This also impressed the faculties in charge and was a help if mistakenly
misinformation was provided.

Internship Report Department of Computer Science Page 13 of 24

3.3. Personal/Professional Skills
This was my first time in teaching. So, it was not so easy for me. Learning new teaching
techniques and teaching it to the students was a big challenge because everyone’s
understanding levels were so different. To make them understand I had to understand their
mindset and know what they already knew. It was a new experience for me. I tried my best
to make them understand the topics.

4. ACQUIRED KNOWLEDGE
4.1. Consequences to Organization
From the learning and experience factor of view I can say that I truly loved my internship
duration as a Teaching Assistant at Department of Computer Science, American
International University –Bangladesh.
Everything isn't so enough to degree and specify flawlessly within this brief time of my
internship period. But its miles at a first-rate opportunity for me to get used to the noble
teaching profession. I have tried by using soul to include the important relevant information
in my report. During the period of internship, I have attempted to learn the art of being a
person that people look up to and supply the theoretical knowledge to the students what I
have gathered and going to collect from numerous courses. The whole duration of my
internship the major aspects that I have been familiar with are discussed briefly in the
following sections.

4.1.1.Working Environment
The teaching and learning environment of this department is very professional. This
turns into a very motivating aspect to the teachers as well as the students. The key to
better education is always a good environment. The fact that the people are highly
ethical is evident. Faculties are always helpful and willing to come of assistance to the
students. This was made evident by my supervisor who was always available and
willing to help. Misbehavior is a rarity and is expected with the amount of stress that
the faculties stay under. The student’s cooperation was always present and led me to
learn a lot from them as well.

Internship Report Department of Computer Science Page 14 of 24

4.1.2.Communication
This internship helped me learn a very valuable thing which is to communicate.
Although this internship was done under the Faculty of Science and Technology most
of the communication was direct and not by social networks.

4.1.3.Time Management
Something that I learned newly was proper time management. Even though the strict
rule of mark for attendance is present in American International University-Bangladesh,
as a student of AIUB time management was never an issue as the courses were free
credit, so the class time could be selected as required. But after joining as an intern I
have actually learnt how helpful time management is, to do and deliver in time is
crucial as if you keep procrastinating you will have lesser and lesser time for the next
work.

4.2. Implications to University’s Internship Program

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the people who have given me invariable
support while pursuing my internship. This includes my supervisor the faculties I was
assigned under and the University for providing me with the opportunity to learn a lifetime
of valuable lessons. If internship programs come into question, it is a very crucial for the
fresh graduate to get a taste of what joining a company and working a job is like. By taking
internship the student learns organizational skills and what the teaching environment is like.
from this internship I have learned:
 Organizational behavior.
 Teaching Environment.
 Practical Work experience.
 Dealing with students.
 Differentiate between theoretical and practical knowledge.
 Make affiliation report with supervisor.

4.3. Effects on Personal/Professional Skills

4.3.1.Ability to Learn
In the internship experience I felt that my ability to learn increased greatly. This change

Internship Report Department of Computer Science Page 15 of 24

is radical and apparent when I see the amount of experience I gained with only three
months of internship duty.
4.3.2.Dependability
To be dependable isn’t very difficult, it all lies on the fact that you have to be honest
and willing to keep your word. I have tried my best to keep everyone’s word and be as
frank and honest as possible. All of these are evidences for the testimonial of my
dependability.
4.3.3.Punctuality
Punctuality is a wonderful trait of a person, one to be admired and respected. It displays
a person's respect for people and time. The days that the labs were in I used to go in
time that enabled me to be punctual with time. But accidents happen and whenever
there was an issue I always informed the respective faculties by e-mail. The class time
was mostly used for increasing my productivity. My hope is that me being punctual and
regular will show off a better disciplinary attitude in me and lead me to success.

5. CONCLUDING STATEMENTS
5.1. Summary
This Internship program provided the opportunity to prepare for the job field both mentally
and physically. The whole experience was new to me and was a real eye opener to how the
job field will be. Before the Internship all I knew was the theoretical interpretation of things,
after the internship I have a very good idea of the practical implementation that drives the
advancement of technology. With the help of all the highly qualified teachers and
supervisors, and the encouragement from the students of the labs that I were assigned to, I
have learned many things that will be beneficial to me in the future.

5.2. Recommendations/Suggestions for Future Strategic Actions

Some things that could be the cherry on the top for this experience would be to allow the
students to also give lectures, in the presence of their respective faculties. This could help
future students by giving them confidence and a firsthand experience of the teaching
profession. As I have attended American International University-Bangladesh both as a
university and an organization here are some recommendations that AIUB could implement
from both the perspectives.

5.2.1.Organization
As an organization AIUB doesn’t have much to improve. They provide an excellent
facility and environment for the teaching staffs and students.

5.2.2.University
As a university AIUB could provide notes and notices of the respective class to the
intern through the universities portal. As whenever there is a notice for class
cancellation interns aren’t informed. This could improve the quality of service for the
interns. The university could also setup an option in the portal where the teachers
assistant and the supervisor can communicate directly and the student can update the
supervisor through that system.

5.2.3.Personal/Professional
Although the current process is being used for a long time the current process could be
a lot more flexible by not boring the intern to require every terms and condition of the

Internship Report Department of Computer Science Page 17 of 24

internship process. This would allow the student to learn responsibility while preserving
their creativity.
The whole course of the internship could also be set as optional as there are a lot of
people who train as early as the third or fourth semester in the job field while attending
university. For those students the course is basically valueless.
