ECE 424F QUIZ 4

INSTRUCTIONS: The problem set is to be accomplished individually. Discussion with your classmates is
encouraged. Copying is absolutely not allowed. Present complete and orderly solutions on 8.5"x11" bond
paper. Label the Smith Charts to indicate points and arcs used for determining required values. Use one
Smith Chart for each problem.

1. For a 100-ohm lossless transmission line:

a. if the line is terminated in a short circuit, find the impedance at a distance 2.3 from the load.
b. if the line is terminated in a short circuit, find the distance from the load at which the admittance is
Yx= - j0.04
c. if the line is 3/8 in length and the sending end impedance is - j2.5 ohms, determine the load impedance

2. Given the lossless transmission line as shown:

[ ( ) ]

Using the Smith Chart, determine:

i. the distance (in terms of wavelength) from the load of the nearest Rmax and the value of Rmax
ii. the distance (in terms of wavelength) from the load of the nearest Rmin and the value of Rmin
iii. the voltage standing wave ratio
iv. the impedance at the sending end
v. the reflection coefficient at the terminating end
a. Using the values obtained from the Smith Chart, compute the following:
i. the line voltage Es at the sending end
ii. how many Vmax (max standing wave voltage) would occur in the transmission line?
iii. how many Vmin (min standing wave voltage) would occur in the transmission line?

3. Using the Smith chart, determine the load impedance if the following are observations on a lossless transmission
line with characteristic impedance of 50 ohms.
Distance of first minimum voltage from the load=4cm with Emin=5V
Distance of first maximum voltage from the load=14cm with Emax=15V

4. A 100 transmission line is to be matched to load with by inserting an open stub. Using the
Smith Chart, determine:
a. the distance (in terms of wavelength) nearest to the load at which the open stub should be connected to
the line.
b. the shortest length (in terms of wavelength) of the open stub.
